Message from Principal David Ewers

North Community,

We have a big week this week with the charity picnic today, state music contests on Wednesday, and the Prom on Saturday. We are also getting close to the crunch time for the end of the school year! Please emphasize engagement and attendance with your student as we push strong to the end of year.

Calendar Updates:

Please review the following calendars for April and May. Key important dates that affect the entire school community are included. Please reach out to the office if you have any questions!

NEWS & UPDATES FROM SM NORTH

Junior ACT Update

We have received all students full score reports from the free junior ACT on February 28th. Counselors will be handing out score reports during all three lunches on April 19th. Please stop by to pick up your report. Your report will include your ACT ID. Having your ACT ID will enable you to set up your ACT account which gives you future access to your scores.

Big picture

Charity Picnic

The Charity Picnic is TODAY during seminar, which will be at the end of the day. All of the proceeds will go to Cool Earth so please bring your $1 to get out of seminar and into the picnic, as well as more cash to participate in the picnic games! There are also a few games that will be free to play.

On Friday, May 5, Shawnee Mission North will host North Relays Track and Field competition which is the premier High School track event in this region. To minimize the impact on instructional time, and alleviate traffic congestion, we are adjusting the schedule for Friday, May 5. We would also like to stress that, as it has been all year, students be picked up in the front circle drive that day. Buses will leave at regular time. The schedule for the day is included below.

L1- 11:40-12:05

L2-12:10- 12:35

L3- 12:40-1:05

Seminar 1:10-2:40

And also switched the order of classes just a bit:

Big picture

Dear SMSD Families,

We are coming to the end of another successful year in the Shawnee Mission School District (SMSD). This time of year is full of celebration for all that has been accomplished, along with feelings of nostalgia over what will be missed as students and staff move on to what comes next.

I am writing to share the dates for the end of the 2022-23 school year in the Shawnee Mission School District:

  • The last day of school for Pre-kindergarten (Pre-K) students will be Monday, May 22, 2023.
  • The last day of school for K-11 students will be Tuesday, May 23, 2022 (early dismissal)

We are close to the finish line, but there is still important work to be done. Let’s dig deep and finish the year strong. Thank you for all you do to support the education of your children. Together, we are One Shawnee Mission!

Sincerely,

Dr. Michelle Hubbard
Superintendent

Transportation Update

Beginning April 11, DS Bus Lines will implement roster checks to verify registered riders. Any student at the bus stop that isn’t registered will be transported to school and will be noted in a written communication by the bus driver for the school office. The official stop ride date will be April 14th.

Please contact Dana Gulick, Transportation Coordinator with any questions.

HEALTH UPDATE

To those families who are contacted through the remainder of the school year, by the nurse’s office staff.

We will be excluding students we have identified as missing required vaccinations until they receive them. We have exhausted our efforts at getting those done.

To prevent a delay in enrolling in the fall, those students who are missing any vaccinations will be called to the nurse’s office and parent/guardian will be called to pick them up.

If you believe you have a student in need of a required vaccine please feel free to call 913-993-9704 or 913-993-6916.

There are community based supports that we may recommend so that your student may remain in school.

We are here to help!

Notes from the NURSE

Keeping our Students Healthy

You may have recently heard news reports about increases of illness including allergies this spring, as is typical with this time of year. In SMSD, we have begun to see increases in absence due to illness; with a few physician diagnosed illnesses and many generalized symptoms.

One of the most important things to help decrease the spread of illness is for those who are not feeling well to stay home. If your child has a temperature of over 100.0 or has vomited or has had diarrhea, they must stay home. Students may return to school when they have been free from fever (without medication), vomiting, or diarrhea for 24 hours.

Your child may also be ill, but without these symptoms. They may have a sore throat, headache, cough, or generally not feel well. If you suspect illness, please keep your child home. If in doubt about sending your child to school, contact the school nurse or your child’s doctor.

Weekly Schedule Reminders....

Please always check the school calendar for the most up to date schedule SMN Calendar

  • April 18: Charity Picnic (modified schedule: seminar in afternoon)
  • April 22: Prom
  • May 5 : North Relays

Our school district has selected the Student Insurance Plan from K&K Insurance Group to make reliable coverage available to parents. If you don’t have other insurance, this plan may be a resource to consider. Additionally, even if you have other coverage, this plan can help fill expensive “gaps' ' caused by deductibles and copays. Coverage may be purchased at any time during the school year.
