From the principal's desk/Desde el escritorio de la directora:
Greetings Zarrow Families,
As we move into November, I am reflecting on why I am grateful for the great opportunity to work alongside you as I serve the students and families of Zarrow. We have an amazing school, teachers and students who arrive each day ready to teach and learn. We have an amazing school staff who ensure that our school is a warm, safe and welcoming space for our students and families. We also have incredible parent groups that provide a variety of different programs and services to support our school community. Please support the Foundation Thanks-Giving campaign that will in turn support our school!
There is so much happening in November! First, we have an important election in Oklahoma. Tulsa public schools will not be in session on November 6th in honor of Civic Engagement Day so that all employees may take this opportunity to exercise their right to vote. I encourage all our families to vote – it makes a difference!
The book fair is November 5-9. November 9th is Grandparents night. These are great volunteer opportunities. Reach out to your homeroom parents to sign up to volunteer for these events! November 9th is also the day we welcome back all of our exchange ambassadors!
Our Kindergarten tours are going strong and will continue through December 19th. Transfer application deadlines are early this year – December 21st. Please be sure to spread the word to all prospective new families to make sure they sign up for the tours quickly and complete the applications by the deadline. This is also the deadline for middle school applications. There have been several parents asking about the bilingual 6th grade option. If you remember, back in March I sent out a letter from our Director of Immersion and Dual Language, Liliane Vannoy, about a focus group in which I participated. As part of this focus group I was able to provide input and feedback for the process to create a vision, goals, and action steps for the Pre-K to 12th grade language pathway. The district goal was to have this ready for 6th grade for the 2019-20 school year. I will have more information for you as the strategic decision towards finalization of this project progresses at the district level.
Thanksgiving break begins Wednesday, November 21st and classes resume Monday, November 26th.
As I said, November is an action filled, exciting month! We have a lot to look forward to. Enjoy!
Saludos,
Sra. Marquez
Saludos,
Sra. Marquez
Counselor's Corner:
Greetings Zarrow families,
I think it’s wonderful that we have a whole holiday centered around being thankful and grateful. Unfortunately, I am the first to admit, I need to be reminded to be thankful and grateful for so many things. The article below talks about being grateful and thankful as a way of life.
A Way of Life
Thankfulness, gratitude, and gratefulness: three words to describe a characteristic, a personality trait, and a way of living.
People who live with an attitude of gratitude are known to live longer, sleep better, and have increased productivity and happier lives.
For much of my life, I would have told you that people are thankful when they are happy, things are going well, and life is good.
But then I met people who seemingly unraveled a mystery:
The elderly woman in a nursing home who was in a great deal of pain. But you wouldn’t know it. She couldn’t stop smiling and thanking me for the visit.
The middle-aged man who recently lost his job, his home and his family. Instead of bitterness, he was focused on thanking the people who offered him food and a place to stay.
The up-and-coming leader I hired who thanked me again and again for the job. Instead of an egotistical response, knowing his qualifications, he must have thanked me a dozen times for the opportunity.
As we think about gratitude, I think of the spirit inside these people. I realized that I could not predict someone’s attitude based on circumstances. I would meet someone who was wealthy beyond belief, but that person was miserable. Someone else would win a major award and shrug off compliments, grumbling that it was not good enough.
Did thankfulness allow the woman to live longer?
Did the middle-aged man end up more successful based on his attitude?
Did the up-and-coming leader create success in his life because of his thankfulness?
Does gratitude help fuel success? My opinion is that it does. It seems to play a major role in happiness, health, and prosperity. The order is more often gratitude first, then success and not success first, then gratitude.
Here are a few tips I have learned from those who are truly grateful. These people are thankful:
Always.
That means in the morning and during bad weather. It seems that losing our health makes us more grateful if we get it back. Losing money makes us thankful for a small savings account. The death of a family member causes us to savor the sweetness of the surviving members.
With small things.
It’s not the major accomplishments; it’s the smallest, almost unnoticeable daily events. It’s being thankful for the smell of a flower or when your football team wins a point.
And express it.
They aren’t quiet about it. These people seem to radiate a spirit of thankfulness, sharing it with others. With a generous spirit, they seem to draw out the best in others. We want to give more to those who are grateful.
By choice.
On more than one occasion, I have heard, “I choose to be thankful,” or “I was raised to be grateful.” Gratitude is a choice.
And have often experienced life’s most difficult challenges.
The truly thankful often have experiences that shape this attitude.
“Living through the Great Depression makes me appreciate such a wonderful meal!”
“I’m so glad that I am able to walk at all. It’s OK that I limp and use a cane!”
“Having a family that loves me so much is a miracle when you’ve lived in the dysfunction that I have!”
These are comments I have heard, making me realize that we are most grateful for life’s mountaintops when we have experienced life’s valleys.
Cultivating a spirit of thankfulness may not come naturally to all of us, but it is certainly a factor for a happier, more satisfying life.

From the PTA Vice President/President Elect:
Dear ZIS Family,
We have some changes happening with the Zarrow PTA, and want to keep you in the loop. Stacey Woolley, who served as PTA President last year and for the first part of this year has decided to resign to pursue her interest in promoting education for our kids in other ways. We thank her for her long service (she was VP prior to serving as President), and know she'll still be an active part of our ZIS community. That vacancy necessitates a process to fill the office, and we'll take care of that at our next PTA general meeting on the evening of November 13. We hope to see you all there, as we have business to conduct and information to share! Your PTA Board is committed to working closely with the teachers and staff, as well as the Foundation to continue the great work already underway.
ZIS has amazing things going on throughout the year. Some highlights so far: Field trips to Gilcrease, Philbrook, and the apple orchard, a fun night of EagleFest for our families, shark dissections for our 4th graders, and a couple of ZIS-dad Firefighters in full gear talking fire safety with the Pre-K. Your participation makes Zarrow a special place. Your time and your funds are absolutely necessary to support our teachers and staff as they provide a unique learning environment for our children. More events and activities are coming, too: from the Book Fair to Viva Zarrow to field trips, there is no shortage of ways you can help and participate in the learning environment around your children.
If you have any questions or concerns, or just want to find out how to be involved in opportunities to support the ZIS experience - you're welcome to contact me at andy.mcmillan@zarrowpta.org.
Best regards,
Andy McMillan
PTA Vice President / President Elect
Support your HZIS Foundation:
Greetings Parents and ZIS Family!
The Foundation is excited to launch the HZIS Family THANKS+GIVING Campaign as the annual Zarrow Fall Fundraiser! This campaign will run from October 31st- November 16th! November is the time to give "Thanks" to all you are thankful for, and as a ZIS Family, we have so much to be grateful for! Our school is the best place for our children to learn and grow into bilingual and bi-literate global-citizens! It's a busy time of year so refer to the flyer below or reach out to the HZIS Board as we launch the campaign all over our fantastic school!
Families are encouraged to take the time to think of what they are thankful for at Zarrow and show us! Send in your contribution along with the bottom half of the form completed as a family to be posted for all of Zarrow to see! Contributions can be made as one-time or recurring donation by sending the top half of the form in with their contributions OR contribute online at http://zarrowschoolfoundation.org/support/!
To encourage our students and families to participate, we will have TWO different goals and prizes for our students to aim for:
Our School Goal is $90K (ambitious but totally attainable and worth it!) - To keep the momentum, we will be throwing a PARTY on 12/21 for the whole school that will include:
- FREE DRESS DAY when $30K is reached!
- Plus ICE CREAM PARTY when $60K is reached!
- Plus PIZZA when $90K is reached!
Also, we want to recognize our families and donors who give $1,250 or more (or $100 monthly recurring) by inviting ALL the family's students to a KIDS' NIGHT OUT (tentatively scheduled for December 14th) with non-stop fun!
Our school would not be what it is without our amazing staff, advanced and resourced classrooms, or the opportunity to participate in such an amazing Exchange Program and we know that these things would never continue without parents and the ZIS Family to support them. Help us to continue to supporting the BEST school in America and our future generation!
Thank you,
The HZIS Foundation
