Pride and Prejudice
By: Jane Austen
The Novel
The Film
Some of the Differences
1. The movie did not have the garden of Netherfield.
2. In the book Lizzie tells her sister about the proposal and in the movie she tells no one.
3. Overall in the film Lizzie was much more outgoing than in the novel.
The Meaning Behind It
One of the biggest aspects I noticed in the changes is that the character of Lizzie is more similar to a woman you would see in our current time period. The women back in Jane Austen's time were quiet and more reserved just like Lizzie was in the novel. In the film she has more of her own personality and stands up for herself more than I pictured while reading the novel. This was probably to build more of a connection with the audience since more people would be reached using the film.
The rest of the differences were smaller things that I imagine the directers had a better vision for or simply wasn't necessary in the film version of Pride and Prejudice.
