Water Pollution
It needs to stop!
What Causes it?
-14 billion pounds of garbage are dumped into the ocean every year
-Oil spills and other chemicals dumped intentionally or accidentally into large bodies of water
-Natural processes like rain carry toxic chemicals from cities to lakes
-Acid rain dumps lots of acid into water
Why Should We Care?
-Swimming in contaminated water can cause rashes and skin problems
-Drinking contaminated water can cause cancer, typhoid fever and stomach sickness, and is worse than radon and secondhand smoke
-When we eat fish that have consumed the pollution, it can lead to health problems
-Oil spills can kill large amounts of animals and fish
How Do We Stop It?
-Turn off the tap when not necessary
-Be careful what you dump down drains and the toilet
-Use environmentally household products
-Take great care not to overuse pesticides and fertilizers
-By having more plants in your garden you are preventing fertiliser, pesticides and contaminated water from running off into nearby water sources.
-Don’t throw litter into rivers, lakes or oceans. Help clean up any litter you see on beaches or in rivers and lakes, make sure it is safe to collect the litter and put it in a nearby dustbin
