Excellence in a Creative Environment for Learning

Teacher Feature: Meet Mrs. Pierce

Mrs. Christi Pierce has been the lead office assistant at Dobyns-Bennett EXCEL for over three years. She enjoys her job because every day is unique and different. Before joining the DBE Team, Mrs. Pierce worked as an Instructional Assistant at Kennedy Elementary, Early Interventionist for TEIS, and an Office Assistant at Johnson Elementary.

Christi is married with two lovely children whom she adores spending time with, especially if it's while kayaking and exploring the great outdoors!

Planning for Next School Year

In preparation for next school year, D-B EXCEL students will be required to attend every Friday regardless of progress, grades or attendance. Fridays will no longer be for extra support but instead a regular school day.

Another change for the 2017-18 school year will be that all D-B EXCEL courses that have an EOC (End of Course Exam) will be taught in Canvas, not Edgenuity. Because of this, all parents will need to set up the Canvas Parent Application to view grades and progress. For specific instructions on how to set up the Canvas Parent App, please see the article at the bottom.

Canvas Parent App

Kingsport City Schools has implemented Canvas as our learning management system. Teachers have most, if not all their coursework in Canvas. To view your student's grades in Canvas you will need to download the Canvas Parent App.

Canvas Parent enhances the potential for parents to engage in their children's education. Parents can review upcoming or past assignments, check on grades, and receive course announcements.

Canvas Parent can be used by anyone who creates an account, has been added to Canvas with an observer role, or has signed up as a parent using the web browser.

Access to Canvas Parent is managed by the student's institution.

Parents can use the Canvas Parent app on all iOS and Android devices. View the Canvas Parent Android Guide and the Canvas Parent iOS Guide.

View Student Courses and Grades

The Courses tab displays the list of courses where their students are enrolled. For each course, parents can see course grades, the syllabus, and assignments and events. Grades display according to the course grading scheme.

View Student Assignments and Events

Assignments and events can be viewed by course or week. Parents can set reminders for a specific assignment or event, which are sent to mobile devices as push notifications.

Set Alerts for Student Activity

The app settings allow parents to set alerts for specific assignment and grade activity. Alerts are displayed in the Alerts page in the app.
