Focus on Fluency
What is fluency?
For the remainder of the school year, I will be focusing a portion of the newsletter on the 5 Components of Reading. To begin this series, we will be looking at fluency in PLCs and during our Monday planning days. Check out this Reading Rockets website for more information on fluency and strategies to use in the classroom!
Fluency Rounds in Action!
Mrs. Patton does fluency rounds in her classroom to help her students! She stations 5 students around the room in a permanent position to serve as the outside circle. Then she has 5 other students rotate on the inside of the circle to each permanent positioned person. This gives her students the opportunnnity to read with other students and build their fluency using the Letterland passage for the week! Try this in your classroom! The kids love it!
Fluency Rounds
Belize It or Not!
Mr. & Mrs. Brown, Ms. Mrazek and I led staff development for the teachers of St. Judes. They were asked to tell us the struggles they have in the classroom on a sticky note. We grouped them together and had them discuss their similarities. Here are the three areas they struggle with:
- Planning
- Resources
- Time
After our discussions, they have the same concerns that we have here in the United States. They have asked us to share reading strategies with them the next time the group travels to Belize! Be thinking about reading strategies you would share with them!
Internet Safety Class
Last week Officer Hager, a trained DARE officer from the Huntersville Police Department, conducted an internet safety class to our 4th and 5th graders! Students learned how to be safe on the internet and how important it is to be careful when sharing pictures and videos on social media. Officer Hager also showed the students the DARE truck that the police department uses to promote the program. We appreciate his time with our North Newton family!
