WBMS Friday Notes
February 3, 2023
Reflections from Ms. Williams
WBMS Parents and Guardians –
Happy Friday!
6th and 7th grade parents - Please mark your calendars for the evening of March 1st. We will host “Navigating Course Placement”, an evening designed to help parents understand course offerings and options in all of our core academic subjects.
The State of Georgia is making several changes to math standards, math course names, and math pathways beginning in the fall. Mr. Amrine, our math department chair, created a preview of two of those changes, which can be viewed here:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=a3ltpQx-3rs
If you are a family whose child currently takes an expiring course mentioned in the video, our math team has already reached out to you with a plan of action. Ultimately, the changes that the state is making will impact a large portion of our student body. We are excited to tell you about the changes and answer questions that you may have!
8th grade parents – Please mark your calendars for Wednesday, May 24th for our 8th grade Bridging Ceremony, which will be held at AHS. More information will be shared closer to the event.
Enjoy the weekend, Jaguars!
In collaboration -
Rebecca Williams

COURSE VERIFICATION INFORMATION
1st Course Verification of teacher recommendations to be completed via a Microsoft form.
Course requests list the courses that teachers recommended for their students. At this time, students may change their teachers’ recommendations and select their electives as well as listing alternative or back–up electives by following directions on the Microsoft form.
Course Requests for the 2023-2024 school year can be viewed in Parent and Student Campus Portals:
Directions:
- In the portal, select “More” in the menu to the left à Select “Next Year Course Request” à View Student Course Requests (ignore required under type)
- If a parent does not have a portal account, then the parent can see
the requests via the Student Portal. Parents can also email their student’s 8th grade counselor for access.
If there are changes to your student’s current course requests or to add electives, please complete the Microsoft form using the Microsoft form link to be given by Wednesday, February 8, 2023. It is imperative that students and parents take time to select the appropriate schedule for next year. Selection of a student’s high school courses should be done carefully as proper course placement is essential to a student’s success! Parents should work with their student to develop a balanced schedule for next year, taking into consideration extracurricular activities, jobs, community service, family obligations and rest. By creating a balanced schedule, students are more likely to find success and enjoy their high school experience.
Reminders:
- Courses are either yearlong or semester courses. Yearlong courses are comprised of 2 semesters are 1.0 unit of credit and semester courses (course numbers usually end in 1 or 2) are 0.5 units of credit. For a complete schedule, the total units of credit for your courses should be 6.0. In the PORTAL, it will be displayed as 60 units, 10 units for a yearlong course and 5 units for a semester course. IB students and students taking courses outside of the regular school day of courses may have additional units. Gifted Participation, starting with 70.23xxxxx is not a course and carries no units of credit. The course number is used to identify students in the TAG Program.
- Please keep in mind that all Fulton Virtual courses and all Georgia Virtual courses are taken off campus. Please indicate the period you prefer to be off campus taking your virtual course in that section of the verification form. Providing your own transportation is a requirement, and students may not be on campus during the period of their virtual course. Please note: A Fulton Virtual Course placeholder with the requested period will be seen in course requests not the actual course, i.e., FVS Off Campus - Period 6. Students are responsible for registering for all online courses. You may locate information about virtual course offerings and registration at the following sites:
FVS: https://www.fultonschools.org/FultonVirtual
GAVS: http://www.gavirtualschool.org
The 1st Course Verification form must be submitted by Wednesday, February 8, 2023.

Spring Picture Day February 14-Pre Orders Only!
Parents and Guardians-Please Read
As we approach Valentine’s Day, it is important to ensure that all homemade candy, desserts, baked goods, or other edible items are not to be sold or distributed during school hours, and that appropriate store-bought items are delivered to the administration. Please know that taking this measure will help us maintain a safe environment for all students with allergies, etc. You can help us protect your student(s) by requesting that they not eat anything given to them by another person, anything that they have not brought from your home or anything not in its original sealed package.
Thank you for your continued partnership in keeping all of our students safe at school!
6th Grade Cultural Kalediscope Field Trip Fernbank Planetarium March 8, 2023
A visit to the Fernbank Planetarium!
The planetarium is the third largest in the country and had recently been refitted with a 4K laser driven projection system. Students will also explore the exhibits, including the actual Apollo six capsule, a copy of the space suit worn by Neil Armstrong and meteorites, many of which landed in Georgia.
PLEASE NOTE – this is the Fernbank Science Center, not to be confused with Fernbank Museum of Natural History!
Impact Earth teaches about meteors, meteorites, asteroids, and comets. The film shows dramatically the effects of the Chixulub and Tungusta events, plus the Pallasite impact that resulted in the Brenham meteorite fall. Impact Earth describes ways that asteroid hunters seek new objects in the solar system and how ground penetrating radar is used to find meteorites that have survived to the Earth’s surface. Narrated by astronaut Tom Jones, the show also discusses ways that humans might try to deflect an asteroid or comet that is on a collision course with Earth.
Cost: FREE

Week of 1-30
This week the students continued to learn about breathing techniques. This week they learned about finger trace breathing.
The purpose of deep breathing is to relieve stress, calm our nervous system down, ease panic and worry and to help bring more oxygen to our body.
Here is a quick visual of what square breathing is:
Next week we will actually practice this technique. If you want to get ahead start, feel free to watch this video demonstration where you can practice along with the narrator. Link to video: Mindful Moments with JusTme (#6 Finger Tracing) on Vimeo

2nd Annual WBMS Walks for Water
The 2nd Annual WBMS Walks for Water is just 7 weeks away, and we would love for you all to come. The event will take place on Sunday, February 26th from 2-5 pm at WBMS. This is a family friendly event, so all are welcome.
For those of you who are new to WBMS, we hosted the inaugural walk last year and had over 200 people attend. We walked with gallon jugs in our hands as a show of solidarity for the people of South Sudan who walk for water daily, and we hosted a Village Market run by students. We hope you will join us and WALK. LEARN. SHOP. PLAY. All proceeds go to our new partner Water is Basic. Our goal is to raise $20,000 to repair 20 wells in the Warrap State of South Sudan.
Please consider registering for the event. If you can’t make it, please consider donating. It takes a village!

Front Office volunteers:
Our school was recently named a 2021-2023 National PTA School of Excellence!
To earn this designation WBMS had to demonstrate families feel welcomed and empowered to support student success, and that our PTA is a key partner for continuous school improvement. Becoming a National PTA School of Excellence began with the joint commitment of PTA and our phenomenal administrative team to work together to welcome all families, communicate effectively, support student success, speak up for every child, share power and collaborate with the community. Congratulations and a huge thank you to everyone who helped make this possible!
To learn more about this accomplishment or to support our PTA during the Fall Membership Drive, visit wbmspta.org.
