Notes from the Principal
Dear MacArthur Families,
- "There are two types of people who will tell you that you cannot make a difference in this world: those who are afraid to try, and those who are afraid you will succeed." - Ray Goforth
- "We may encounter many defeats but we must not be defeated." - Maya Angelou
- "Knowing is not enough; we must apply. Wishing is not enough; we must do." - Johann Wolfgang Von Goethe
- "What you lack in talent can be made up with desire, hustle, and giving 110% all the time." - Don Zimmer
- "Success is not final; failure is not fatal: It is the courage to continue that counts." - Winston Churchill
- "Success seems to be connected with action. Successful people keep moving. They make mistakes, but they don't quit." - Conrad Hilton
When you read the quotes I have picked out, what do you think they all have in common? Growth Mindset is what I think of when I read those quotes. Basically, the quotes show that we must not be defeated, we must chase passion, we must give 110%, we must have courage, and we must do or take action. Having a growth mindset is a belief that we can control our own ability and we can learn and improve. The key to success is having a growth mindset.
Some key words or phrases associated with having a growth mindset are:
· View challenges as opportunities
· Acknowledge and embrace our imperfections
· Challenge
· Improve
· Anyone can be good at anything, but skill comes from practice.
· Having a growth mindset improves self-esteem
A growth mindset can have an impact and be very powerful for all of us.
Have a Great Weekend.

PTO News
The Douglas MacArthur Elementary School PTO is excited to host our first annual Playground Fundraiser Gala on February 22, 2020 at the Cedar Lake Lighthouse Restaurant. This event is intended to raise much-needed funds for a new playground purchase and installation at Douglas MacArthur Elementary School in Cedar Lake, Indiana, which costs upward of $60,000 per section installed. Sections of the existing playground at the school are currently in deteriorating condition and in dire need of replacement. We believe that this fundraiser will put us one step closer towards creating a new safe place for the children to play, exercise and nurture the crucial physical and social development skills fostered by outdoor play.
We cordially invite you to consider joining our endeavor by purchasing tickets for this exciting event. This year’s gala is themed “The Roaring Twenties in 2020” and will feature hors d’oeuvres, dinner, dancing, dessert, a silent auction, cash bar and door prizes. Tickets are $100 per person and can be purchased online at www.macpto.com. This fun night out is just one week after Valentine’s Day – so consider saving your date night out to join us !

January fruit of the month is Grapefruit
Grapefruit can look intimidating if you have never tried it before because it is so large, however it is actually a cross between a sweet orange and a pomelo fruit. Grapefruit also has the nickname of “Forbidden Fruit”. The word “grape” in grapefruit refers to how it grows, which is similar to grape clusters. The three countries that produce the most grapefruit are: 1) China 2) USA 3) Mexico. Grapefruit is known to lower cholesterol and is a delicious citric fruit to add to your diet!
Students who buy a hot lunch on Friday January 16 will get a tasting of grapefruit!
Pink Grapefruit Sorbet
3 large pink or red grapefruit
1 cup white sugar
¼ cup light corn syrup
4 cups water
1 dash red food coloring (optional)
Use a vegetable peeler or zester to remove 3 long strips of peel (just the zest, not the pith) from the grapefruits. Set aside. Squeeze out 2 cups of grapefruit juice. In a saucepan, combine the grapefruit, sugar, corn syrup, and water. Bring to a boil to dissolve the sugar. Cook for about 2 minutes and cool in an ice bath or the refrigerator. Strain the grapefruit juice through a sieve or strainer to remove the pulp. Discard the peel. Stir in the sugar syrup and the food coloring (if you are using it) one drop at a time until it reaches a light pink color. Pour mixture in the container of an ice cream maker and freeze according to instructions. Transfer to a container and freeze until firm before serving. Enjoy!!
