Here's What's Happening at Milan Elementary School!
September Students of the Month are Good Listeners
Established in 1996 as a partnership between our school and the Milan American Legion Post, the Student of the Month Program has been a big success at Milan Elementary.
For those who are unfamiliar with this program, it gives recognition to students who put forth outstanding effort in targeted areas and encourages others to follow their good example. Students receive a certificate prepared for them by Legion Auxiliary Member Thelma Reese and presented to them by Legion Representative Ron Mills. They also have a group photo taken which appears in the local newspaper. Each month there is a different theme.
September’s theme was “Good Listener” and the following students were chosen as those who always listened attentively and politely and so were able to follow directions as given and act appropriately.
Congratulations go out to: Preschool: Brenna McCleary. Kindergarten: Eden Carpenter, Sophie Andrew, Jax Padgett, Abagale Calhoun. First Grade: Bailey Taylor, Ella Labazzo, Jordyn Landis. Second Grade: Hayden Hartman, Apryl Hatfield, Kaidyn Dunn. Third Grade: Isabella Dietrich, Jackson Meyer, Gavin Trenkamp, Tianna Bushorn. Fourth Grade: Naomi Holt, Miley Ellis, Zeke Gilday.

MES ANNUAL CANNED FOOD DRIVE is NOVEMBER 12-16
During the week of November 12th through the 16th, MES will be hosting a food drive to benefit our local food pantry. Every month, 75+ local families, including lots of boys and girls, are helped by your donations. And, volunteers tell us numbers are on the rise! Needed items include canned and boxed foods, paper products, and cleaning supplies. You can send your donations to school with your child.
We want to help as many families as we possibly can. Our goal is to collect enough to make sure that every boy and girl in our community has enough to eat so we can all have a Happy Thanksgiving and a Merry Christmas!
As an added incentive for the students, the grade level that collects the most donations will receive an extra recess.

eLearning Day - Wednesday, November 14
Wednesday, November 14 will be a corporation-wide eLearning day involving all Milan Schools. As on our previous eLearning day, students will be attending “virtual” school. Students will not physically be in the building but expectations for completing the assigned work and submitting it on time are the same as if they were actually here at MES. The buses will not run and no meals will be served. Our staff will be participating in professional development activities in addition to having “office hours” during which they will be available to answer questions and assist with assignment completion. Our cafeteria will open at 12:00 noon for any student, accompanied by a parent/guardian, who needs wifi access. It will remain open until 4:00 p.m. when our support staff leaves for the day.
Students will receive their assignments for eLearning Day in time to insure they understand the assignments and are able to download the material if needed. Your child will complete and submit schoolwork to their teacher by using the iPad or Chromebook issued to them by the school. Your child’s “attendance” for that day will be determined by their participation in completing and submitting the assigned work. Student work will be due Thursday, November 15. Students not completing and submitting the work will be considered as being “absent” on Wednesday, November 14.
If questions arise, students can contact the teacher in multiple ways including email, leaving a voice message at 812-654-2922, Google Classroom or other learning tools. Teachers will respond during their “Office Hours” or other times they are available. Watch for more detailed information from your child's teacher about completing and submitting schoolwork that day and when their specific office hours will be.
If your child is unable to access the internet to complete the assigned work, please contact the principal directly. Mrs. Ahlrich can be reached at 812-654-2922, ext.287.

“Falling in Love with Family” MES Family Fun Night
Milan Elementary hosted Family Fun Night on October 26th and welcomed families to engage in a night of dancing, games, and socializing. Activities were planned to practice Synergizing (Leader in Me Habit 6) and Sharpening the Saw (Habit 7). We enjoyed seeing families spending time with each other and appreciated the opportunity to interact with caregivers and students. We want to thank all those families who came to support our Leader in Me program as we feel that our students benefit greatly from learning the 7 habits and practicing them in their daily lives. These life skills are making an impact on our students now and will in the future as well. From our newly painted hallways and walls, Monday morning meetings, school-wide jobs, and leadership binders, Milan Elementary students are benefiting from the comradery encouraged by the Leader in Me program where every person is valued and opportunities to lead are encouraged. Milan Elementary looks forward to future family events and opportunities to engage families in fun and learning. The Leader in Me program has brought new spirit and life to our school, and we plan to continue sharing this with our families!

TLC VOLUNTEERS/MENTORS NEEDED!
Mrs. Brenda Schwering, School Counselor, is looking for TLC (Tender Loving Care) Mentors who are interested in volunteering on a weekly basis to help students with reading and math skills during the school day. Please reach out to her with questions or for signing up through her e-mail at brenda.schwering@milan.k12.in.us or by calling the school at 812-654-2922.
You do not have to have a child or grandchild in our school to volunteer to give support to a child. Past volunteers have included retired senior citizens, members of the local clergy, and former teachers. The only qualification is the desire to help a child.

BOX TOP COLLECTION PROCEEDS = $666.40!
Our first round of Box Top collections is over and we collected a whopping total of $666.40 in box tops! Congratulations go out to Mrs. Gray’s Second Grade Class for filling the most collection sheets for a total of $112.00 to benefit our school. The PTO is arranging a special surprise for them. Also, a round of applause goes to Mrs. McKittrick and her fourth graders for taking on the job of overseeing the collection.
The next submission date will be in the spring so keep clipping those box tops, fasten them to a collection sheet and turn them in. There is a collection box outside Mrs. McKittrick’s door along with extra pages as needed. Filled sheets may also be turned in at the office and extra sheets are also available there. Please do not send box tops in a baggie or envelope because they must be attached to a sheet for us to get credit for them.
