Reading Junior High Longhorns
Message from your Principal
We are entering our last week of the 1st 6 Weeks and we are so proud of the work and dedication that has been the Longhorn Way since day one. Our teachers have been on the fast track juggling both in person and online instruction and our kids have stepped up and are in a groove as they navigate their way through 7th and 8th grade. It is great to see just how well they have adjusted to the Longhorn Loop, wearing masks and taking care of business in the classroom and at home.
Our 2nd 6 Weeks begins next week and we are finalizing schedules this week for our students who have chosen to return to in person classes. Please know that the deadline for changing instructional models was September 18th and can no longer accept changes for the 2nd 6 weeks grading period.
This week on Wednesday, we are going to join in to raise awareness for Childhood Cancer by wearing GOLD! Please join us and wear GOLD on Wednesday to spread awareness about such a tragic disease that has affected so many lives both on the Maroon track and in our community.
This Friday is an early release day and students will go home at 12:15.
Thank you for sending us the Best of the Best!

Nurse's Notes - A Message From Mrs. Turner
Due to COVID concerns, I am asking that you do not bring Tylenol, ibuprofen, decongestants, etc. to school for your child. These types of medications can mask the symptoms of illness. I have attached a "Can My Child Go To School" flow chart with guidelines for when you can send your student to school and when they can return to school if they have been ill. In alignment with LCISD Guidelines, any students with symptoms of illness will be sent home whether they have a fever or not. Thank you for your patience and understanding with this process, as we work together to ensure that our students and staff remain healthy.
Flu season is just around the corner. Fort Bend County is offering a Drive-thru Flu Shot Clinic October 3, 2020. Please see the flier below for additional information.

8th Grade Parents- PSAT Information
8th Grade Parents:
What: PSAT- 8/9
When: Wednesday, October 14
Who: All Face To Face 8th graders (Virtual 8th graders will have the option to test in January-more information coming soon)
Why: PSAT has no official role in college admissions. While it's worth taking seriously because it offers a first glimpse at “official” scores which can be used as a good preparation for the SAT.
Here are some tips for taking tests:
*Sack lunches will be offered to all students. Students may bring their own lunch. No DELIVERIES or MICROWAVABLE lunches
· Get enough sleep the night before the test and have a good breakfast the morning of the test.
· Listen closely to any instructions.
· Focus on addressing each question individually.
· Relax. If you're so nervous that you blank out, you might need a mini-break. Of course you can't get up and move around in the middle of a test, but you can wiggle your fingers and toes, take four or five deep breaths, or picture yourself on a beach or some other calm place.

Thank you!
Thanks to all who have already joined the PTO and donated for this school year. Our hospitality committee provided a fabulous Fajita lunch for all of the teachers and staff at the beginning of the school year. This Fall they are preparing a bunch of fun treats for the teachers - everything from breakfast tacos to Thanksgiving pies.
YOUR donations allow us to treat the teachers and staff and thank them for their continued hard work and dedication.

NEW Videos & Parent Portal
How does the SMART Tag work?
The SMART Tag uses an RFID chip inside the card. When a student gets on or off a bus, they present their card to the RFID reader installed on all Lamar CISD school buses. The RFID technology only requires that the student place the card near the reader, it does not have to be inserted into the reader. The SMART Tag tablet confirms if the student is on the right bus, and when the student attempts to get off at a stop, they scan their card ensuring it’s the right stop.
Information gathered by the driver tablets is shared in real-time using secured cloud technology. The barcode printed on the card is used only by applications on campus.
What features does SMART Tag have for parents?
Once the District has piloted the system with students, parents will have access to the SMART Tag Parent Portal to help keep them informed when their children ride the bus. Parents can also turn on SMART Alerts to receive a text message when the bus will arrive at their child’s stop in the morning and afternoon.
Additionally, parents can view the riding history of their child and can opt in to see a live map of their student’s bus when it’s on the way to pick them up and while they’re on the bus.
For more information on the SMART Tag system, click here.
What is the SMART tag system?
SMART tag is a system designed to improve the safety and security of students who utilize school bus transportation. It provides live monitoring of where and when students load onto and unload off of their school bus to keep transportation, school administrators and parents informed.
