Quote that Best Represents the Character:
"Dee was lighter than Maggie, with nicer hair and a fuller figure. She's a woman now, though sometimes I forget. How long was it that the other house burned? Ten, tweleve years?........ And Dee. i see her standing off under the sweet gum tree she used to dig gum out of, a look of concentration on her face as she watched the last dingy gray board of the house fall in towards the red hot chimney. "Why dont you do a dance around the ashes" I'd wanted to ask her. She had hated that house so much. I use to think she hated Maggie, too. "
Type of Character: Flat & Static
The reason Dee (Wangero) is flat is because she stays the same selfish person throughout the whole story. The quote even says that she sat an watched her house burn and didn't even care. Her sister was badly burned in the fire and Dee (Wangero) was sitting under the gum tree digging gum out of it watching the house burn.
Type of Characterization: Indirect
The reason Dee (Wangero) is indirect is that you have to infer that well basically Dee (Wangero) is a brat. She wants her family to live the way she wants them to live. She also takes objects without asking such as the churn.
The reason the burning house is part of characterization is because when the house was burning Dee (Wangero) was sitting under the gum tree digging out gum watching it burn. She hated the house and was glad it burned.
The reason the churn is a symbol is because this is the first thing Dee (Wangero) grabs and takes without asking therefore giving us another example of how Dee (Wangero) is selfish.
