January 2017 Edition II

Library Updates

These past couple of weeks, we've been busy working with teachers and students on a variety of projects. We've worked with...

  • 7th grade science students on their ecology research project. We created a library resource page for them.
  • 8th grade English students on their thematic book project. We presented them with some possible thematic book pairings.
  • 7th & 8th grade ESOL students on a research project related to urban legends. Students learned about six different legends at a series of stations we posted around the library.
  • 7th & 8th grade students on research skills lessons: conducting keyword searches, using the FCPS databases, avoiding plagiarism, and using Noodle Tools to create Works Cited pages.

Current Library Display

"Red" Any Good Books Lately? This display includes a motley assortment of books. The common denominator? They all have red covers.

In Other News...

  • Students are reminded to return overdue books. We're about to start a new marking period-- all LMS students should kick it off with clean library accounts!
  • Next Tuesday, January 31st is the last Silent Sustained Reading day of the second marking period. The classes with the most stickers have a chance of winning a pizza party.
  • The American Library Association has announced the winners for the 2017 children and teen book awards. Click HERE to see the full list!

New Color Printer

We have a new color printer in the library (thanks, PTA!). In order to offset the cost of replacement toner, we are charging students 25¢ a page.

Battle of the Books Update

As a reminder, Battle of the Books (BOB) meets on Thursday afternoons in Room 121--across from the library. We are currently reading and discussing this year’s Virginia Reader’s Choice books (in no particular order). We are asking all BOB members to fill out this form for each of the books that they read. Ultimately, the book questions that they generate will be used for practice rounds of our competition. To find out more about this club, please visit the Battle of the Books Website.
