Types of Bamboo Fencing
There are a lot of different styles of bamboo fencing, and selecting the right one for your back yard depends on your taste and the kind of decor you are looking to attain. Virtually all commercially available bamboo fencing will come in either rolls or panels. The most common kind is going to be made from long rods with a diameter of approximately 1" or of thinner canes about 1/2" in diameter. These rods or canes will be held collectively by heavy-duty galvanized wire.
This kind of frame, rolls, and panels come in woven bamboo too. These include smaller canes held (generally also by wire) in packages. Another manner of bamboo fencing is called broken bamboo fencing, manufactured from the outer half of the bamboo cane and held together by cable. Bamboo fencing manufactured from woven or split bamboo, however does not last so long as fencing made of sturdier sticks or canes.
Now, these are merely the basic manners of bamboo fencing, the ones most commonly available commercially. But bamboo fences have been basic components of Asian and Asian design courtyards and gardens for centuries. There's a plethora of specific styles, some which are simple and some which can be enormously intricate. Here are a few popular ones that come in the Japanese architectural tradition. All of these utilize a dark twine known as shuro nawa to maintain small bamboo sticks together.
Misu - This is a sort of screening fence that uses horizontal bamboo poles like pliers, installed onto a vertical support structure of posts on either side of the fence.
Kenninji - This design is a classic screening fence style without any gaps between panels or rods. The bamboo panels are supported by half-round railings attached with dim twine.
Twig fence - This is a much less conventional and easy bamboo fencing style. It is basically bundles of bamboo twigs attached to vertical or horizontal support posts. A casual, tropical appearance.
Yotsume - Yotsume is a open-style fence consisting of wide horizontal railings encouraged by pickets. Its surface appearance shifts based on the angle from which you look at it.
Royanji - This is a shorter fence suited especially for gardens. It is made up of lattice of thin bamboo shoots connected to top and bottom railings, which are supported by articles on each side of the fence.
