ENCOURAGE YOUR TEEN TO READ!

Importance of Parental Support of Reading

Reading is a necessary skill for succeeding in school. As a parent or guardian, you can help your child succeed in school, and life, by supporting them in reading. As part of a study, a survey revealed adolescents' attitudes about recreational reading, and stated that, "... a significant positive correlation was observed between parents' reading frequency and attitudes toward reading, and their children's reading frequency and attitudes toward reading." Avid readers in the study described, "...a kind of literacy apprenticeship that was maintained by at least one interested parent, with shared taste and enthusiasm playing a greater role than gender in determining effective parental encouragement of book reading. These parents rewarded their children's continued engagement in recreational book reading with encouragement, support, regular enthusiastic interaction about books, and the giving of books as gifts. "

If you'd like to read the entire study and its findings, click the link below. You may have to access with your child's NEISD credentials.
