Our Path Note Topic
It has been a good start of the school year, and just had a long weekend. Nevertheless, new challenges will face us over the next few months. How do we stay happy through the struggles we face?
Ryff & Keyes, 1995 (Positive Psychology) provide several measures for being happy.
1. Autonomy
The ability to resist social pressures, regulate behavior from within, and evaluate oneself based on personal standards.
2. Environmental mastery
Feelings of mastery and competence in a variety of situations, the ability to take advantage of opportunities, and the ability to craft one’s environment to suit one’s needs and values.
3. Personal growth
Feelings of ongoing development, the realization of one’s potential, and observing oneself changing in ways that signify acquired knowledge and increased effectiveness.
4. Positive relations with others
Possessing warm, trusting relationships with others characterized by give and take, and the capacity for intimacy and empathy.
5. Purpose in life
Having goals and a sense of meaning and belief that gives life purpose.
6. Self-acceptance
Possessing a positive attitude toward oneself, including both one’s good and bad qualities.
Arthur C. Brooks, author of the NYTs best seller From Strength to Strength: Finding Success, Happiness, and Deep Purpose in the Second Half of Life. Brooks suggests that many professionals peak in their best days between the ages of 39-43. After that, he recommends looking at making some sort of change to what you do in order to stay happy and effective.

Can you answer this?
What did the kid say to the person that told them they wouldn't amount to anything because they procrastinate too much?
How do you tell the gender of an ant?
Piece of the Puzzle
This Week's Piece of the Puzzle is Mike Bercaw. Mike is the First Choice teacher at the middle school. He was nominated due to the fact that his students gave so many reasons why he is so special. "His students say that class lessons really make us think about what we are going to do after graduation". " Mr. Bercaw has a laid back, easy going way, which helps him get along with our varied personalities". " His dedication to First Choice helps kids get on the right path". "We appreciate you, Mr. Mike Bercaw"! Although an adult nominated him, his students provided the reasons.
Join us in congratulating Mike Bercaw as this week's Piece of the Puzzle!
New Policies
Suggested revisions and new policies come from the PA School Board Association, board members, staff, administration, and others. The proposed policy goes to the Policy Committee for review. The Policy Committee will either approve the proposed policy to go to full board for review and adoption, or will deny or wait for a different time to revisit it.
Even though it will not be weekly, stay tuned for any new and/or recently adopted policies in this section.
Challenge Answer
Put it in a glass of water. If it sinks it’s a girl ant. If it floats it’s buoyant.

Food Policy Update: White House National Strategy on Hunger, Nutrition and Health
Of particular note: Modernize federal programs so enrolled individuals can more easily utilize benefits. Many federal programs were established decades ago. To bring federal nutrition assistance programs into the 21st century:
- USDA, through support from ARP funds, will expand online shopping in WIC.
- Online shopping is currently only being piloted in a small number of WIC state agencies.
- USDA will also propose to update regulations to make the SNAP online shopping program permanent and continue to add more online retailers and states to the existing program.
- Online shopping can expand access to healthy food and break down barriers for marginalized communities and older adults who may face discrimination or stigma, increased health risks, or have limited mobility or transportation.
- Additionally, SNAP participants are not currently able to use their benefits to purchase certain prepared foods, which limits choices for families shopping at SNAP-authorized retailers.
- And, as WIC comes up for renewal by Congress, the Administration supports addressing WIC eligibility limitations to avoid nutrition gaps during key stages of life.
