2019 STEM Fest: STEM in the Valley
Three hops across the board and the crowd erupts in cheers and high fives. No, this isn’t a World Cup soccer game, it’s elementary students playing chess at STEM Stops during the elementary school’s annual STEMFest. Our elementary school transformed common spaces once again to celebrate student exploration and learn about our Oley Valley history through science, technology, engineering and mathematics with discovery learning in the lobby and gym and workshops peppered throughout the school. This year’s STEMFest celebrated a theme of STEM in the Valley with featured workshops presented by alumni and local business leaders.
Senator Judy Schwank helped us open the festival with a personal visit on Monday, April 15. She was delighted to learn about the efforts to support inquiry learning and create enthusiasm and excitement for discovery. Our youngest students were delighted to share their large block constructions and make parachutes with the Senator. Later in the morning she joined our first graders as they worked with Coryn Stump to explore biochemistry.
Our STEMFest is designed to create a school-wide event that offsets high stakes testing with student led inquiry. Students enter the building with smiles as they walk past our STEM Stops centers in the front lobby. While intermediate students focus on the PSSAs, our youngest learners enjoy festival activities and challenges. After completing their assessment block for the morning, third, fourth and fifth graders work their way through workshops, exploration centers, collaborative games and computer science activities.
Student-led exploration is at the center of OVES STEMFest. Students enjoy forty minutes of open exploration each day with activities such as the walk-through water cycle, construction zone with mega blocks, laser reflection mazes, what’s in a stream watershed exploration, energy conversion and electrical circuits, quilt block making, garden design and weaving in our STEM Stops lobby or line dancing through codes, catapults, historical comparisons, covered bridge building, exploring the Oley Valley floor-sized road map, step into history with green screen and drop everything and read corners in our gymnasium.
Workshops are a new feature this year that highlight STEM career paths through hands-on experiences with alumni and local business leaders. Coryn Stump, recent OVHS graduate and current Penn State senior lead the students through a chemical reaction science experiment of exploding foam. Mike Ruemmler, local photographer and print production specialist, introduced storytelling through photography and taught our students to take the pictures featured in this article. Bob Wolf, engineer at FoxConn Technologies, taught our students about reflection and refraction using lasers. Austin Schaeffer, recent OVHS graduate and shop supervisor at Levan Machine, talked about his career path as we explored gears, pulleys and machine design. School Board President Dave Pollock presented our final workshop in the series about electricity and circuits through fun activities with squishy circuits and paper circuits. We are grateful to the involvement and support of our local community as we seek new ways to build excitement and introduce our students to careers and opportunities in STEM in the Valley.

Oley Valley Middle School NASA Club is out of this world!
This year students in Mrs. Hawkins NASA club had the opportunity to participate in a project called Tomatosphere. The program is operated by First the Seed Foundation in the United States. Tomato seeds were planted and the number of germinating seeds was recorded.
This experiment uses plum tomato seeds from conventional sources. There was a control group of seeds, and a group of seeds that had been to the International Space Station. The origin of the seeds was not revealed until the data was submitted. On March 14, 2019 students from Mrs. Hawkins NASA club was assisted by Miss Jagielski’s Evirothon club to plant the seeds. The seeds were closely monitored and data was collected and reported.
Our final results revealed that about 79.5% of the control seeds germinated while about 58.6% of the International Space Station seeds germinated. Food availability and life support are major limiting factors in extended space exploration. Research collected will help to determine whether space travel will change the germination of the seeds.

On Saturday, April 13th, senior Alysha Ulrich competed at the regional level of the Rotary 4-Way Speech Contest held at Albright College. This contest featured speakers from Wyomissing, Fleetwood, Conrad Weiser, Reading, and Kutztown. Each competitor addressed a controversial and captivating topic within his or her speech. Topics included the importance of community service, the negative effects of social media, the prevalence of media bias, the necessity of open-mindedness, and the complications of the electoral college. Alysha Ulrich spoke about gender equality, specifically the Equal Rights Amendment, and earned third place in the contest. She was advised by Mrs. Kallis at both the local and regional level contests. Alysha performed exceptionally well and was a wonderful representative of Oley Valley High School.
Ms. Gundrum's Career Day Presentation
Ms. Gundrum set up a career speaker from the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) to speak with any interested high school students who would like to learn about the varied career areas within the FBI.
On Wednesday, March 20, 2019, Special Agent Jared Witmier spoke to approximately 40 students in the high school library. Special Agent Witmier spoke about how one goes about applying to become an FBI agent. He specifically addressed how one can start now to prepare for applying to the FBI, the age window of acceptance, academy training, physical fitness, salary, retirement, what things prevent one from becoming a member of the FBI, what special skills the FBI looks for in its candidates, and the diverse areas within the FBI that one can specialize.
Special Agent Witmier has been an FBI agent for 16 years. Currently, he is in charge of the Allentown office of the FBI. For 14 years he worked in New York City, but he has also spent time working in Washington, D.C., Philadelphia, Afghanistan, Saudi Arabia, China, and many other places throughout the world. His specialties include counterterrorism, drug trafficking and international espionage. He shared a very nice PowerPoint presentation, about the FBI, with our students, followed by information about his experience joining and working for the FBI, followed by an hour-long question and answer period. All the students were very interested in his presentation and asked a lot of questions. Many students spoke with Special Agent Witmier one-on-one following his presentation.
It was an honor to have Special Agent Witmier come to Oley Valley High School. His presentation was very informative and shed light on a very interesting career field. Everyone thanked Special Agent Witmier for his work in helping to keep America, and its citizens, safe.
WorldQuest Team goes to Nationals!
Over the weekend of April 26th, the Oley Valley High School Academic WorldQuest team traveled to Washington D.C. to compete in the 2019 National Academic WorldQuest competition.
The WorldQuest team would like to thank the Qatar-America Institute for hosting us at the Friday night reception and also thanks to the United States Institute of Peace for hosting Saturday’s competition.
We would also like to thank the Greater Reading Area World Affairs Council and the Oley Valley School District for covering the expenses of the trip. Through their generosity the club was able to bring the core team and four alternates on the trip to experience this educational and fun filled weekend.
At Saturday’s competition the core team, made up of Brandon Oesterle, Gabriel Turoscy, Erin Dillon and Myrra Small, were able to score 85 points, thus placing fifth in the National Competition.
Over the weekend the club members were able to visit many educational places like, the National Mall, National Zoo, and the Smithsonian Institutes. They were even able to take in a showing of “The Capitol Steps".
The club members would like to thank again the Oley Valley School District and the World Affairs Council of the Greater Reading Area for allowing us to travel to Saturday’s competition and letting us explore our Nation’s Capital.

Thank you for your participation in this year’s “Best Communities for Music Education” survey presented by The NAMM Foundation. We are pleased to inform you that your school has received a 2019 Best Communities for Music Education (BCME) award.
Congratulations Donovan Readinger!
Over the past few months, OVHS student Donovan Readinger has been working hard, auditioning and participating in a number of festivals throughout Pennsylvania. He successfully auditioned into Senior County Band and Senior County Orchestra. Then he auditioned into District 10 Band and District 10 Orchestra, which are two separately auditioned festivals that are held in District 10 and are comprised of several counties in the surrounding area. Donovan then advanced beyond District 10 Orchestra and participated in Region 5 Orchestra, a festival that consists of all counties in Districts 10 and 7. Finally, he auditioned into All-State Orchestra, a group comprised of students from all across the state, that performed at the Pennsylvania Music Educator’s Association Conference. The PMEA conference was held in Pittsburgh from April 3rd to April 6th.
Oley Music goes to Broadway!
On Wednesday, April 4th, the OVHS Music Department went on a day trip to New York City! The students and staff got to experience a real-life Broadway masterclass taught by current members of Broadway’s Chicago. Students and staff learned the song and dance for “All That Jazz” in an actual studio where actors and actresses audition for the very same show. After some free time in the city, the group headed to Gershwin Theater where they saw Wicked, and they concluded their trip with a group dinner in town!
