May 17, 2023 - NEWSLETTER
Westwood Families,
Congratulations to Westwood teacher Amy Howard on her retirement. Amy has been working in Spring Lake Park Schools since 1990. She taught grades 6, 7, and 8 music sparking the interest and talents of countless students. We are thankful for her work with our students and bringing music to life over 30 years of choral concerts and musicals for our community and kids. We will miss her.
Tomorrow, our grade 8 students will be completing the MAP test for Math. The schedule for the day will remain the same. Students will test in their math class.
Thank you to our PTO and all of the families who appreciated our staff last week as a part of staff appreciation week. We all enjoyed the morning treats, lunch, and thoughtful notes from parents and students.
The end of the year is a busy one for students. Be sure to refer to the Westwood calendar for all of the concerts, events, and field trips scheduled for our students as we celebrate and wrap up the 2022-2023 school year.
Have a great week,
Tom Larson
Principal

Spring 6th grade Choir Concert
On Tuesday, May 9, the 6th grade choirs hosted their final spring concert of the school year! The singers performed many different pieces including musical selections sung in Japanese and Spanish along with a piece focusing on English and American fairytales. The students started and ended their concert with a lot of energy by singing two different pop songs. The concert showcased many soloists, speakers, and instrumentalists! The singers also paid tribute to choir director Amy Howard, as she celebrates her retirement at the end of this school year! Mrs. Howard will be missed, but the singers will continue on with her legacy!
Fossil Observation
Scientists in Mrs. Ganske's 7th grade classes observed fossils collected from Lilydale Regional Park in St. Paul and from bluffs along Hwy 14 in SE MN to try to piece together what Minnesota's landscape and environment may have looked like 450 million years ago.
Poetry May Madness
Students in 7th Grade Language Arts are working on Poetry May Madness, studying 16 different poets in different match ups and selecting a winner of each round to advance to the next round on their bracket. Students will vote on a winner at the end and the brackets that match will win a prize! Through this process students are exposed to different types of poets and are able to explore which types of poetry they like or don’t like.
Literature Circle
Students in Spanish I are engaging in a Literature Circle unit, and reading Spanish novelas together in groups!
