Jill, Rose, Doris and Henry . . . Thank you for all that you have done for our school and students!
Message from Jeff and Yolanda
Graduation ceremonies signify a rite of passage that mark an end to teenhood and the beginnings of adulthood. It also marks the transition to another phase of life such as is the case with our GED and LWTC graduates. But most importantly it is a time for students, teachers, family and friends to come together to recognize the achievements and hard work that helped the students reach that point. Thank you to all the staff who worked behind the scenes to help make the events memorable ones for our students and their families:
For GED and LWTC - Jaime Hernandez, Marie Coleman, Scott Schnappauf, Lynne Bruce, Lynn Bedrava, Anne Fredette, Bridget Kennedy, Angie Imbriale, April Prescott, Annia Bonilla, Olivia Ralston, Jane Coine, Heidi Duff, Bob Waller, Deb Young, Samantha Green, Jonah Nicosia, Paul Holimon, Christine Briggs, Peter DiMaria, Robert Ellwinger, Lazaro Hernandez, Charles Greaves, Hunter Sayers, Lindita Lici, Kirk Jervis and Rick Ponton. A special thank you to John Hofacre for helping coordinate IT and audio visual He did a phenomenal job! Also we are deeply indebted to Darlene Crete for taking on the responsibility of Graduation. It takes a team to make it happen!
Graduation also means that we are coming to the end of the school year and it is time to say goodbye to staff, who like students, are ending one phase of their life and entering the retirement chapter of their life. This year, we have two teachers who will leave a huge void on our campus:
- Jill Peterson will be retiring after dedicating more than 29 years in nursing education. Jill's career started at LWTC in 1989 as a practical nursing instructor. Jill has played a huge role in mentoring teachers and producing thousands of practical nurses in our community. The values and knowledge that she has imparted on our new teachers will never retire. We will continue to build on them. Throughout the years, the school could always rely on Jill whenever there was a void. She even filled-in as a health science coordinator until the school was able to hire one. She is such a big believer in our school that when her husband was looking for a new career, she recommended the Pharmacy Technician program of which he is now a graduate. Her passion and laughter will be greatly missed. Thank you, Jill, for everything you have done for us!
- Rose Whippo came to teaching as a second career, having previously retired from the computer science industry. We thank Rose for taking a chance on LWTHS at a time when we were struggling to find good math teachers. We were fortunate to have you as part of our LWTHS/LWTC family for the last five years. While you will be greatly missed, your family will be blessed that you will be living close to them in the Orlando area.
- Doris Estremera has been part of the Lorenzo Walker since 1998. The majority of her career was spent working in Early Childhood Education Center. During her time at LWTC, she has seen students transition from the Early Childhood Center to LWTHS or LWTC. We are forever thankful for Doris's commitment to stay until the last child left the center. For the past five years, Doris has been the "face" and "voice" of our school as she is often the first person people meet or speak with. Doris will now have time to spend with her husband and children.
Retiring for the third time from CCPS is Henry Norona. After retiring as a guidance counselor, Henry came back to work full time as an ESE secretary at GGHS and then joined Lorenzo Walker family as a testing proctor which he did for several years before retiring a second time. He was not ready to stop work completely so he came back to teach part-time in the Project Explore program at Moorings Park. Henry made quite a lasting impact on the students teaching them life and work skills that will last them a lifetime. He was able to bring his love of carpentry to the classroom and taught the students how to build recycle bins as well as outdoor furniture using pallets. We wish him the best in Tallahassee.
These teachers have spent countless hours influencing students on our campus as well as beyond the classroom walls. They have poured their hearts and souls into making a difference by not only encouraging students to excel in their field but also to be good citizens and encouraging them to give back to the community. In the words of Henry Adam’s, “They have affected eternity, and they can never tell where their influence stops.” They will be greatly missed but we know that they, like us, have to keep moving forward.” Hopefully, in one way or another they will keep their connections to LWTC/LWTHS. Please be sure to stop by the end of year celebration on Friday 6/1 at 11:30 a.m. and wish them well. The Sunshine Club has planned a Aloha Party for all to enjoy. We hear that there is a special performance that will take place!
