Sources of Strength Trusted Adult Campaign
Dear Families,
In February, our current 6th and 7th graders will be selecting the electives they'd like to take next school year.
We got feedback from many of you last year that you would like the opportunity to be more involved in that process. Because we agree that your input is an important part of making sure each student has a schedule that will help them grow and thrive and explore their interests, we are going to try a new elective request process this year.
Next Wednesday, February 5, students will bring home a paper Elective Request form that will include information about how to access course descriptions on our website. We will also email an electronic copy of that request form the same day.
Please take some time to talk with your students about their elective choices.
- 7th graders will need to bring their signed elective request form with them on Friday, February 21. During HEART, they will put their elective requests into our electronic system.
- 6th graders will need to bring their signed elective request form with them on Monday, February 24. During HEART, they will put their elective requests into our electronic system.
We will send a reminder email the day before they complete the elective request process. Please let me know if you have any questions.
Thanks, as always, for sharing your kids with us. It is our honor to serve them.

Guest Speaker in 6th Grade Science
Austine Luce presented to our 6th grade science class about action steps we can take to reduce food waste. She and our students acted as consumer scientists to think about all the connections a Starbucks coffee cup has to the environment. Students loved learning about soil, compost and social justice. Thank you, Austine!
February 13-- Winter Parent-Teacher Conferences
Here are some things to know about that evening:
- These will be all open conferences, where you are welcome to visit with your students' teachers any time between 4:00 and 7:30 that works well for your family.
- Please bring your student with you!
- They may set a timer in order to hold themselves accountable to a time limit.
- They may open their classroom to all families waiting for a conference so that those waiting have a comfortable place to sit.
- If you feel you need a longer timeframe or a more private environment to speak to one or more of your student's teachers, please reach out to your counselor: Ms. Gaines (for students with last names A-K at Kelsey.Gaines@jeffco.k12.co.us) or Mr. Gordon (for students with last names L-Z at Guy.Gordon@jeffco.k12.co.us). They will be glad to set up a different time and date for you to have your discussion.
Attention 8th Grade Families: Poetry Cafe is Coming!
Thank you for your support! It's going to be a wonderful event!
January Performing Arts Newsletter
Guitar/Jazz Band Update: As some of you may have heard, Mr. Ken Sawyer (Guitar and Jazz Band) is not teaching at Manning this semester. Just before winter break, Columbine High School's instrumental music director resigned. Since Mr. Sawyer has taught instrumental music in Jeffco for four decades, the Columbine HS principal asked him to help their community through this transition. Although Mr. Sawyer will be missed by Manning students and staff alike, we wish him well as he leans into this new challenge! Thank you to Mr. Sawyer for his immense contributions to music at Manning!
In his place, we are happy to welcome Mr. Kalon Miller (yes, Derek Miller's father!) as our interim Guitar and Jazz Band teacher! Mr. Miller has over three decades of experience teaching instrumental music in Denver Public Schools. As a semi-retired teacher and frequent sub at Manning, Mr. Miller is already a familiar face to our music students. His willingness to jump in has helped make this a smooth transition. Please welcome him to our community!
