Director's Details - Week 14
Classical Conversations of Burien
“And he hath put a new song in my mouth, even praise unto our God: many shall see it, and fear, and shall trust in the Lord.” Psalm 40:3 (AKJV)
Remember to try to carve out time for map tracing and drawing in your home school. I received several maps from two families this week and it encouraged me to make it more of a priority in my own home. One mom shared that it has become such a part of their day that it has developed into a habit for their homeschool. I love that!
I'll be praying for each of you as you settle back into the schedule of homeschool. (Wasn't that vacation time dreamy?!) See you next week!

Information Meeting Training
If you are interested in hosting information meetings to share the vision of CC, please let me know. Kira Heflin and I will plan for a training in early January and then, invite the trainees to join us for a January information meeting presentation. After that, we'll set you loose on your own to host at least one info meeting during the registration season (February through June)

When? October 29 - February 11
Why? To sharpen our map skills AND to raise money for local international families
**There will be a jar and a folder for tallying maps drawn. Please tally for every 5 cents earned per map and put one corn kernel per 5 cents in the jar. You may submit your maps or keep them. We will also have a map of Africa where we will color in a country for each dollar earned. Please track your own child's progress. If your child is receiving donations from someone besides me, track that with tally marks and corn kernels but keep the funds until I announce that we will be submitting the donation.
2016-17 Registration
Frequently Asked Questions:
1. If new communities open, I will offer a one week period during which you can switch your registration with no financial penalties.
2. If you change your mind about CC, the registration fee is non-refundable. Other fees may be returned prior to July 20th.
3. If you move more than 100 miles away prior to the school year, I am able to transfer all fees to your new CC community.
Director Information GoTo Meeting
Unfortunately, no further meetings are scheduled at this point. I will pass along the dates as soon as they become available. If you have a student entering Challenge within the next year or two, please try to attend one this spring. You never know how God will move and at the very least, it will give you some insight into the role so you can pray better for your leaders.
Community and Area Needs
2. Foundations/Essentails Directors for new area communities - every year I turn away many families who would love to be in CC...we just don't have the room. If God has placed it on your heart to see a new community develop, please pray and consider listening to a Director Interest call.
3. Foundations tutors - I anticipate at least 6 Foundations class again next year. Please consider whether you are called to mentor one of those classes...or to be a much needed substitute.
4. Essentials tutor - There is potential for a second Essentials class on our campus next year. If all eligible students enroll, I think I have us at 16 or 17 students. Essentials classes are capped at 16 students with the potential of up to 3 classes (33 total students) per campus. I'd like to plan for at least, 2 Essentials classes next year.
5. Support Representative {SR} (aka Support Manager) - Western Washington is in need of more support staff for our growing communities. Many hands make like work. If you want to encourage and support the area growth and directors, please pray about serving in this vital role.
CC Information Meeting
Our first open house will be January 28. Visitors must attend an information meeting prior to attending an open house.

Memory Master Details
1. This should be done for God's glory not our selfish pride (as parents or kids). This is a great opportunity to do some character building - humility, diligence, perseverance...
2. You can end the process any time. If you only make it through one parent proof, it is still a reason for celebration. Celebrate each step along the way. The capacity God has given us for memory and learning is amazing . Every endeavor to learn our memory work is "training our brains to retain."
While in the past some communities have celebrated mastery specific subjects, CC has asked that we do not do this. Memory Master is a difficult challenge and we want to respect those that put their all into learning the whole thing. However, you are welcome to celebrate within your family any mastery your child achieves. I'd love to hear about it also. I want to celebrate these successes with you. We simply aren't able to provide special acknowledgment at the End of the Year Ceremony.
If you, as a parent, are interested in attempting the process, we will gladly celebrate your efforts and successes with you. CC policy encourages parents to try it but does not require that we commit our tutors or directors to help with the proofing process for parents. That said, I will gladly do a director proof for any adult who wishes to attempt it.
Foundations to Challenge Connections
To Combine a Christ-Centered World View and the Classical Model
“Within the framework of a biblical worldview, Classical Conversations teaches parents the classical model: the tools for learning any subject.” Classical Conversation 2010 Catalog, p. 2 The classical model of education is based on the Trivium (Latin for “three roads”), which divides learning into three stages:
• Grammar: basic facts, vocabulary, and rules
• Dialectic: assimilating facts, reasoning, analysis, processing new concepts
• Rhetoric: presenting articulately, persuasively & logically to in uence others (that we may make Him known!)
Reminder: Grammar corresponds to Foundations; dialectic to Essentials & Challenge A & B; rhetoric to Challenge I–IV. Note that there are aspects of the dialectic and rhetoric in Foundations (scienti c experiments & presentations, for example), and also new grammar in Challenge. It is a continual process. As we use the classical tools of learning well, we also uncover how each subject has been designed by God, relates to other subjects, and points us back to Him. Thus, studying becomes not a dry academic exercise but a treasure hunt that leads us to knowledge of God. Our natural responses are to pour forth praise or to pour forth acts of service.
