ELA:
Regular:
This week we will analyze authors purpose. We will read an informational article on the Triangle Fire of 1911. We will then read eye witness accounts and compare and contrast the eye witness accounts to the facts of the fire. Students will also receive vocabulary words for the week tomorrow. We will have a short formative assessment on Friday! Please let Mrs. Gordon know if you need anything.
Read 180:
Students in Read 180 are working in Workshop 5. This Workshop opens with background about an outbreak of SARS that previews the work of medical experts in later texts. The first text introduces the flu pandemic of 1918–1919. An article explores what causes illness and profiles major historical outbreaks. Then, a suspenseful narrative recounts a modern-day outbreak scare. Students then travel back in time with a historical fiction account of an outbreak of plague during the Middle Ages. An informational text gives tips for staying healthy, from high-tech gear to everyday practices. Finally, a persuasive poster shows how images communicate powerful messages about health. Students will continue to work in the Read 180 app at their own pace.
System 44:
Students in System 44 are working in Module 4. This module is titled Famous or Infamous. We will be looking at how television and the internet influence our culture. Students will be working on comprehension, vocabulary, and writing skills continuously throughout this module. Students will continue to work at their own pace in the System 44 app.

Social Studies:
This is one of our favorite weeks of the year… we will spend our week studying Gandhi, the independence of India, and watching the movie “Gandhi.” I encourage you to check in each day with your child about what they watched in class that day. This is an Oscar award winning movie and does an excellent job depicting Gandhi’s use of non-violent protest to work towards independence. It will be one of the more memorable lessons we complete all year.
