Cedar Grove Friday Flash
April 17, 2020
Dear Cedar Grove Families,
As you may have already learned, today Governor Hogan and State Superintendent Salmon announced that Maryland public schools will be closed until May 15.
While we realize that online learning continues to have some challenges, we will work with you to help resolve any technology issues or concerns that you may have. We appreciate your support in ensuring that your child(ren) attends and participates in live classroom meetings and completes assigned work. As you know, much of the student assignments are to be viewed and completed by your child prior to math and reading classes, so please reach out to your child's teacher regarding any assignment related questions.
Due to the number of days lost from our emergency closure and to make up for some lost time in school, online classes will now be in session on April 28. This day had previously been scheduled as a No School day for students and teachers on the MCPS calendar; however, it will now be a school day.
We received word from the Klinger Insurance Group that the Read to Ride program/contest has been postponed until the next school year. You may recall that the program was going to take place from March 16 to April 29 to promote a love of reading with chances for students to win bikes as prizes. Although we are sorry that this program could not take place this year, we look forward to having the opportunity to offer it next year.
Reminders and general information:
- Families can pick up printed math packets for prekindergarten and elementary students at all meal sites between 11:00 a.m. and 1:00 p.m. every Wednesday beginning April 22 at any of the meal distribution sites. Click on Meal Site Information to view these locations.
- Printable learning packets and additional parent resources may also be found from the following website:
- For technical support, please send an email to this address, mymcps_support@mcpsmd.net, if you need any assistance.
- For additional math help, go to Knowledge on the Go for video lessons and written materials for Math by grade level!
We hope that you and your family continue to stay safe and stay well.

From Mrs. Hirschhorn, Our Media Specialist
Hello everyone! I hope this finds you well as we are moving into our 20th day of distance learning! Here is the April Media Monthly! Please bookmark and visit this page often. I will be updating it as media activities are posted in The Virtual Media Center in MyMCPS Classroom! Your students should see the tile on their dashboard. These are what I call My-Choice media activities, created for each grade level and are completely optional! In addition, the Virtual Media Center is loaded with online resources -- everything from eBooks and Read-Alouds to Informational databases. And, for our students who are logging into an MCPS Chromebook with their MCPS Google accounts, here is the slide show with the Morning News Blast embedded so they can see the morning news (and our special guest videos!). I miss all of your children so much, and I hope that you are all seizing the moments as we experience this historical event together.
From Mr. Jansson, Our PE Teacher
Hi Friends,
PE in April is going to look a little different then usual. We will be doing lessons from home. We will be finishing up marking period 3. The PE department is working hard to get that out to us and will show us what that will look like soon. Most importantly, I want you to take care of yourselves. Wash your hands, keep at least 6 feet away from others, and cover when you sneeze or cough. If you can get outside, do so as long as you keep away from others. Fresh air and the sun will make you feel better.
In April we celebrate National Parks week. If you have a chance, explore some national parks online. There are many cool web sites.
This is all new for us. There may be some obstacles, but please don't stress. Just try your best. We are in this together.
Take care and be healthy!
Kindergarten Orientation
Kindergarten Orientation will not be taking place on April 30 and May 1 as previously scheduled. As soon as we have more details about the process for new kindergarten students and their enrollment, we will share it with you.
Survey Still Open to Special Education Parents
Parents or guardians of children receiving special education and related services (such as speech, physical, or occupational therapy, etc.) are asked to complete this year’s Maryland Special Education Parent Involvement Survey. The information you provide will help guide the state’s efforts in improving special education and related services in public schools. Complete one survey for each child receiving services. The survey is anonymous and can be completed online at www.mdparentsurvey.com/.
The deadline to complete the survey is Friday, May 15. View more information at the following links:
