In the Dominican Republic, 11.4% (1279) of pregnant women are exposed to smoke everyday. This is dangerous for pregnant women especially because it can harm the baby and can create birth defects and diseases. Also it can lead to lung and breast cancer. An example of this is that the baby may come out with very little weight that is unhealthy. These women are exposed to secondhand smoking because the Dominican Republic produces tobacco so constantly smoke is all around them.

In the Dominican Republic, the legal age to smoke is when you turn eighteen. However, there is no set monitor system that checks your age and how much tobacco you use. They do ban smoking in restaurants and night clubs but people are constantly smoking so the air is filled with smoking fumes.
