The 4-H Update

4-H'er Spotlight: Independent Riders 4-H Club
Tiffany Michaels was on her way home on Saturday morning, March 16, 2019 after running to the local gas station to get coffee. It was 7:30 a.m., as she drove into her lane and encountered a sheriff’s car in her drive. The sheriff ordered a mandatory evacuation as a dike had been breached and flood waters were closing in. Michaels was given 15 minutes to evacuate. “No one believed it would actually flood after 2011, so it was difficult to take the evacuation serious," said Michaels. But as a precaution, Michaels had moved her horses to a friend’s house the night before.
Several weeks later when she was allowed to return to her home, Michaels found that her entire acreage including house and barn had been under water with levels as high as 6.5 feet. It was a devastating and life changing experience, but Michaels salvaged what she could including her horse equipment. In addition, she texted aerial flood photos to her family and friends.
Coincidentally, at The Independent Riders 4-H club recent meeting, the activity consisted of members cleaning their saddles and equipment. So it was at the next meeting Leader, Linda Foxworthy, shared Michaels' flood photos with club members. “I asked the kids if they would like to do a community service project? When I told them that my friend, Tiffany, needed help cleaning her water damaged horse equipment, all hands shot up without hesitation.”
Members of The Independent Riders include: Boston Campbell, Londyn Campbell, Chloe Crowell, Addie Horst and Ava Irwin. “I have not met the kids yet, says Michaels, but I am extremely appreciative for their hard work!”
Way to go, Independent Riders 4-H Club! We are proud to have you in 4-H!
