Writing to Monitor Comprehension
Virtual “Red pens” and corrections using Microsoft Word
The traditional method of editing a students work by physically writing on their essays or labs is hard to break away from. Yet we as a society are migrating to a digital world. As we migrate from paper/pencil to digital documents, it’s hard to convince yourself to give up traditional editing.
Each of the Microsoft applications have editing capabilities that make this a breeze. Microsoft Word has both the capability to leave comments, the same as if you were to use the traditional red pen. To leave comments follow these simple steps:
1. Open up your desired Word document
2. Highlight any text where you want to use your “virtual red pen”
3. Click on the “review” tab at the top of your Word document
4. Click on “new comment” and write whatever you desire [B1] (example below)
Word also has the capability of “tracking changes.” Perhaps you want a student to create a rough draft and between the rough draft and final copy you want to see what a student changes. Or perhaps you want to make changes to a students work, or a colleagues work and you want them to see what was changed. To track changes, select the review tab at the top of your Word document, and select “track changes.” Deletions, changes and additions all will appear differently on the document. Check out the following link below to watch a short tutorial on both Word skills. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=m7tmsWN6uH0

Please show your Lorenzo family spirit and vote in the links below for our Staff and Student of the Month. This is your opportunity to give kudos by nominating a staff member. Of those nominated, the leadership team will select a staff member and a student from each category to honor through a certificate and special lunch in the dining hall.
Nominating a Staff or Student of the month is quick and easy. Just click on the Padlet links. Type the name of the nominated staff or student in the "Title" portion of the Padlet and post and your reasoning in the body of the post.

Stress Management (referenced by Healthy Lifestyle, Mayo Clinic 2017)
Is your glass half-full or half-empty?
Positive thinking helps with stress management and can even improve your health. Positive thinking doesn’t mean that you keep your head in the sand and ignore life’s less pleasant situations. It just means that you approach more difficult situations in a more positive and productive way.
I don’t think I need to tell you about all the positive health benefits that come with positive thinking and optimism. But, I will tell you that having a positive outlook enables you to cope better with stressful situations, which reduces the harmful health effects of stress on your body.
Ways to focus on positive thinking:
1. Identify areas to change
2. Be open to humor
3. Follow a healthy lifestyle
4. Surround yourself with positive people.
5. Practice positive self-talk
Examples:
Negative self-talk -It’s too complicated. It’s too radical a change
Positive self-talk - I’ll tackle it from a different angle, Let’s take a chance
When your state of mind is generally optimistic, you’re better able to handle everyday stress in a more constructive way. That ability may contribute to the widely observed health benefits of positive thinking!
Kudos to . . .
- Paul Holimon for organizing a Chess Tournament for the students after school.
- Ron Rigney for a successful and well attended NHS induction ceremony.
- Lianne Elliott and her tireless effort to sign our 11th grade students up to take the SAT for concordant scores and/or college admissions. We had 4/5 students pass the SAT to meet high school graduation requirements.
Happy Birthday!
