The Horace Mann & Leet Connection
Online Learning March 30 - April 3, 2020
A Message from Principal King and Director Rouner
Thank you to all who have reached out to us to express what is working for them and what is not with home learning. Some families are having a great time with home learning, and some are finding it very challenging. We understand this is hard for many of our families, so please remember we are here to support you during this time. The critical thing to remember is that this isn't a competition, and however, you are supporting your child is perfectly fine. Nobody signed up for this, but it is merely our reality for the moment as we work to stay healthy and protect the health of others. We encourage each family to do what is working for them. This won't last forever.
Let's have some fun this week. Several families in the Maryville community have taken to placing teddy bears in the windows of their homes. The idea is that families can get out for a walk, and the children can go on a bear hunt. What fun!! Take some time with your child and place a teddy bear in your window and then go for a walk and see how many bears you can find each day!
We hope you enjoy the learning your teachers have planned for this week. This week, many of the lesson plans will have some video contributions from our new practicum teachers who would typically be in the classrooms with us. Our teachers and practicum teachers are using videoconferencing to collaborate and build lessons for your child to do at home. This idea of planning for children you've never met can be very intimidating for our practicum teachers, so we hope you will wrap them with support and send them positive thoughts.
As always, we encourage families to offer supervision to children when accessing resources online.
We are wishing you well and sending you positive energy!
Preschool
It's been good to see you!
- We collaborate with experiences together!
- We remind each other we are still here for each other!
- We remember that important learning and discoveries happen through play!
- We see our friends and smile again!
- We will provide a whole group meeting every morning at 9:00 a.m. at this link https://www.facebook.com/groups/262617593874304/ through the Leet Center private Facebook page. See you there!
- During the whole group meeting there will be a prompt for some play ideas, experiences or activities that might be fun for your child. You may choose to do them if you'd like. Conversations with your child, playing beside them and asking questions about how they are playing will be a great benefit to their play and learning themes.
- When you are ready, share your child's story with their own class in their teacher's new private group page on Facebook that they have made for this pandemic time. Your child will be able to connect with their friends, teach others a skill they have, or reach out to add to the group experience or project that their teacher is prompting.
- There will also be a few nutrition experiences throughout the weeks. You can find those on the Facebook page as well.
Seesaw - Information for Families
New to Seesaw this week: Blogs and Activities
Hi Famlies, I have set up the School Office Seesaw Blog. When students click the globe icon, it will share their items with the school community. Here is a little information to explain more https://web.seesaw.me/blogs. All posts are first viewed and approved by the teacher before they are published. I have set up the Office Updates blog to be private requiring a password to protect the privacy of our children in the Horace Mann Community.
All passwords were shared in the Seesaw classrooms.
Your child can also check out the activities section to see a fun way to share a picture of themselves and practice using some of the features of Seesaw. They can click the globe icon when they are done to share with our school community. We have a few friends who have already found the activity and made a post. Our teachers are learning more about this feature to offer more engaging activities for your child.

Phyllis and Richard Leet Center for Children and Families
At the Leet Center, family relationships and children are our passion! At the heart of our learning together, you will find educators who see children as capable learners. Children learn through investigation, exploration, and communication. Our pre-school environment is a natural home-like atmosphere that is filled with inquiry and joy each day.
The Leet Center is also home to our developing outdoor classroom and we believe that all the learning that happens indoors can also be present in the outdoor spaces. Open-ended materials and carefully cultivated spaces provide a place for collaboration, thinking, and representation of ideas. Our learning community includes educators and university students who are working together to listen and learn with children. Children, educators, and families each play an important role in honoring the intellectual and emotional integrity of children.
