PEP RALLY!
Tractor Parade
FFA students participated in the Roxbury Tractor Parade on Sunday, October 3. Students spent multiple days after school building the float for the parade. They won first prize for "Most Patriotic!" It was an exciting event where students worked together and had a really great time in the community.
On Sunday, October 10, agriscience students volunteered their time at the Harvest Fest in Washington, CT. Food science students prepared various baked goods in the food science kitchen to give away for a suggested donation.
The Partnership Goes Picking
Shepaug Valley Partnership had a community outing to the Woodbury Diner and March Farms which gave the opportunity to teach social skills, order from a menu, as well as leave a tip. For a leisure activity, they chose apple picking at March Farm.
Fantastic Math (and Beasts)!
Mrs. Testani’s fifth-grade students were eager to solve their very first math word problem at Booth Free School. Meanwhile, upstairs in fourth grade, students designed creatures and wrote short stories featuring their fantastic creations.
Senior Project Spotlight
Wyatt King - Screenwriting
For Wyatt King's senior project, he will be writing a screenplay that follows a folk singer as he travels throughout the South during the 1960s. He initially had the idea of writing a screenplay after he and a friend wrote The Fall of 2020, last year for the fall play. Wyatt found this to be a fun and fulfilling process, and he became interested in writing a more thoroughly researched and socially relevant script. In terms of the subject matter, the idea stemmed from his respect for musicians, like Woody Guthrie and Pete Seeger, who used song as an engine for social change. Wyatt thought that his subject matter would also be an interesting avenue by which he could broach how past moments compare to today’s socio-political climate.
Brendan Kelly - The Spirit of Volunteerism
For Brendan Kelly’s senior project, he will be attempting to obtain his national EMT certification, raise awareness for mental health issues in first responders, and interview staff around the Shepaug community. He intends to volunteer at his local fire department as a volunteer EMT and work with a peer support group for first responders called FrontlineCT. Brendan also plans to design brochures and PSAs to put in the school newsletter and raise funds through t-shirt sales. He ultimately wants to answer the question: why do people volunteer?
The Macricostas
On October 7th, middle school students took advantage of the beautiful weather to travel to the Macricostas Preserve for a wilderness hike as well as to investigate some of the water properties of the streams and ponds in the area.
