~HISPANIC HERITAGE MONTH BEGINS SEPTEMBER 15th~~ EL MES DE LA HERENCIA HISPANA COMIENZA EL 15 DE SEPTIEMBRE ~
Each year, Americans observe National Hispanic Heritage Month from September 15 to October 15, by celebrating the histories, cultures and contributions of American citizens whose ancestors came from Spain, Mexico, the Caribbean and Central and South America.
The observation started in 1968 as Hispanic Heritage Week under President Lyndon Johnson and was expanded by President Ronald Reagan in 1988 to cover a 30-day period starting on September 15 and ending on October 15. It was enacted into law on August 17, 1988, on the approval of Public Law 100-402.
The day of September 15 is significant because it is the anniversary of independence for Latin American countries Costa Rica, El Salvador, Guatemala, Honduras and Nicaragua. In addition, Mexico and Chile celebrate their independence days on September 16 and September18, respectively. Also, Columbus Day or DΓa de la Raza, which is October 12, falls within this 30 day period.

It is important that all students attend school every day. Exceptions may include if your child is ill. Please plan all family vacations during school vacation days. It is important to set your child up for success by assuring they are in school. For a detailed look at the Santa Monica_Malibu Unified School District's attendance policies, please click this link > http://www.grant.smmusd.org/registration/.
We realize some absences are for health or other reasons. But, when students are absent they can fall far behind in what they learn. Whether the absence is excused or unexcused It means your child is missing important classroom learning time.
Some Attendance Tips:
- Make sure your students keep a regular bedtime and establish a morning routine.
- Turn off all electronics including TVs, phones, and tablets at bedtime.
- Make sure clothes and pack backpacks are ready the night before.
- Check with our school nurse or office staff if you are not sure about when to keep your child at home due to illness.
- Avoid scheduling vacations or doctorβs appointments when school is in session.
- Talk to teachers and counselors for advice if your student feels anxious about going to school.
- Develop back up plans for getting to school if something comes up. Call on a family member, neighbor, or another parent to take your student to school.
Please let us know how we can best support you and your student so that they can show up for school on time every day.
~HELPFUL INFO FOR PARENTS~INORMACION IMPORTANTE PARA PADRES~
- Please ensure your child is in a quiet learning environment. Too often we have been hearing excessive noise when a student unmutes themselves to engage in their class activities and discussions.
- Please provide your child with a set of headphones that has a microphone. Students who are using headphones that do not have a microphone must unplug them to speak. This is distracting to the student and takes valuable time from the class.
- Please ensure your child's learning group is observing distancing and children are wearing masks. We have seen instances where this is not taking place.
- Please speak with the learning group's coordinator or parent-organizer about adhering to the above tips.
- While SMMUSD does not organize or manage these learning groups and what occurs there is out of our locust of control, we all have an interest in making sure Grant students are given the best opportunity at learning during Distance Learning.
Please contact your teacher or Principal Fuhrer if you have any questions or suggestions! We are all in this together!

~ SMMUSD DISTANCE LEARNING GUIDEBOOK: A VALUABLE RESOURCE ~
~ A MESSAGE FROM SMMUSD STUDENT SERVICES REGARDING HOME SCHOOLING ~
It has come to the Santa Monica-Malibu Unified School Districtβs (SMMUSDβS) attention that due to the Coronavirus (COVID-19) pandemic, more parents may opt to homeschool their children this coming school year in a βPrivate School Settingβ and not part of an Independent Study or Distance Learning option offered by SMMUSD. The purpose of this letter is to acknowledge SMMUSDβs responsibility to verify compulsory education for students residing in the Santa Monica-Malibu Unified School Districtβs boundaries and to provide resources to aid in informing parents of their legal requirements for students enrolled in private/home schools.
In California, there are several ways that parents educate their children:
SMMUSD currently offers Distance Learning and Independent Study (for 9th-12th grade students only)
Additional options throughout the state include an existing online virtual public school, private school, or public charter school.
Distance Learning
As it was previously announced that students shall begin the 2020β2021 school year in distance learning, the Parties agreed teachers will implement the elementary, middle and high school distance learning agreements established by the Teaching and Learning Working group. Members of the collaborative group included teachers and administrators from throughout the District and from every grade span.
The agreements include a commitment that teachers will provide live instruction for 230β240 minutes daily, except for the secondary compressed day. Studentsβ experience with live instruction will vary as βlive timeβ will include whole class and small group instruction, both delivered synchronously and asynchronously, as well as independent work. Classroom teachers will provide specific schedules prior to the first day of school. Additionally, the agreements include a commitment that teachers will communicate weekly what students can expect in the upcoming week. To read more aboutβ¦
Independent Study
Independent study is a different way of learning. In independent study, a student is guided by a teacher but usually does not take classes with other students every day. The student works independently. This option is only available in SMMUSD for 9th-12th grade students. The program is located at Malibu High School and Olympic High School.
Additional Options
Parents who opt to privately educate or βhome schoolβ their children must first properly file a Private School Affidavit (PSA) with the CDE (Education Code (EC) Section 33190). The supervisor of attendance or other person designated by the local governing board will then verify that an affidavit was properly filed. By filing an affidavit, the owner/head of the school acknowledges, under penalty of perjury, that the (home) school meets all statutory requirements for a full-time private school, such as keeping a record of attendance, which includes noting all absences of a half day or more, grade reporting, and providing instructional materials.
Parents are not required to report to their school district. However, keeping in mind that the SMMUSD has the responsibility for checking on school-age children not attending school through Every Student Succeeds Act (ESSA) and the California Compulsory Education Law. To avoid confusion it is best to inform the district that you intend to home school- privately educate your children and provide proof of school by completing the districtβs withdrawal form and have filed an affidavit prior to withdrawing your child from their public school.
It is important to note that the verification required by EC Section 48222 shall not be construed as an evaluation, approval, or endorsement of any private school or course.
For more information, parents may refer to the CDEβs βSchooling at Homeβ web page located at https://www.cde.ca.gov/sp/ps/homeschool.asp, which includes information about filing the PSA as well as educational resources.
_____________________
Β° a 12. Β° grado)
EducaciΓ³n a distancia
