A Message from the Principal
I hope everyone enjoyed Fall Break. The changes in the temperature and the trees has been refreshing. We started back with a bang with instruction, teacher training, and family events.
Our Communities in Schools Coordinators facilitated a Resource Fair. The fair was well attended by families and community members. Over 200 coats were given away, just in time for cooler weather.
The PTO hosted a Trunk or Treat. It was so fun seeing children dressed up and excited about Halloween. The PTO raised $500 through the event and children were able to collect candy, visit with staff and community members, and play at our brand-new playground. It was a great night!
Teachers and staff have attended training this week to learn about a new reading program. The state has issued a new law around reading instruction and our new UFLI curriculum meets all requirements and has years of evidence of success. We are excited to begin implementing this curriculum for phonemic awareness, phonics, fluency, and spelling. We will continue to use our current HMH curriculum for comprehension and vocabulary. In the coming weeks, we will send you instructions and videos to explain the home practice pieces of the program. Grading in reading and spelling will look different as well. We will send a separate communication on updated grading policies.
We are extending our Fun Run fundraiser to November 10th, hoping to get more involved. This is our one major fundraiser this year and the funds are needed for our intervention program, our Eagle Store, student parties, gym and music equipment, and staff celebrations. Please consider sharing the information on your FB pages. All donations big or small count. See the flyer below to help your student start collecting donations. You can click the flyer to go to our school page or send this link https://stephendecatur.myfunrun.com/. From there you can click the "Donate to Participant" button to go to your student's page.

Decatur Township Culture Guide
E= Events: We cannot control things that happen
R= Response: We can control our response to the event
O=Outcome: Having a proper response will get the desired outcome.
This concept is powerful for all of us. Daily, many things happen that are out of our control. We can lash out or we can pause, think, and then respond. Pausing for reflection allows us to get the outcome that we need and want.
