What a great start!
We have had an amazing start to our school year. Shout out to all the teachers who put in hours on hours of work preparing for our students. Special thanks, too, to our parents for sending us such a great group of students. This is going to be a great year.

Art with Ms. Aeschliman - Welcome Eagle Heights families! I am so excited to have your student(s) in the art studio. We started the year by making a seat sheet (like a placemat) for each PK - 6th grader because we have white table tops in the art room and it’s tough to keep them clean if we don’t have something underneath when we start our art making.
Preschool - second students are starting the year with a Dot Day project. We are reading “The Dot” by Peter H. Reynolds and making different dot artwork in each grade. PK will be making coffee filter marker dots. Kindergarten is making tempera stick cardboard round dots. 1st grade is doing an oil pastel watercolor resist dot and second grade is doing a ¼ of a monochromatic dot. International Dot Day is celebrated each year around Sept. 15ish so we will have a dress up day on Thursday, Sept. 15 at school!
3rd-5th students will be starting the year with a cartoon-type project by creating a drawing of their “character” following one of our PBIS expectations in an art related situation. For example, one of our expectations is to be responsible so a student could draw a glue bottle character putting away their art supplies where they belong.
In 6th grade 2D art this year I have created a “2D Art Game” that they enter on Google Classroom. Students can choose a project, complete it and then earn a badge upon completion. The badges are digital on their game. Once they have completed 4 badges they can level up to the next group of badges to start earning them and so on. It gives them voice and choice on what they would like to create but also gives them some parameters and guidance.
I will be using Artsonia again this year for students’ portfolios. It is very private with only their first name and a number assigned to them online. No private identifiable information is published online and you can see your students’ work, along with visiting the gift shop and purchasing products that have your students' work printed on it. If you signed up last year, you don’t need to sign up again, it will roll over to this year! If you are new or didn’t sign up last year, it’s not too late, you can still sign up and more information will be coming. Artsonia is an amazing company that also offers you the option to invite other family members (think grandparents, aunts, uncles, cousins, etc.) to become a part of your student(s) fan club, so even if they do not live nearby they can see what is being created at school!
I do have an Amazon wish list for EHE because the yearly budget only affords me the basics in art supplies. If you would like to help support our art studio and the EHE artists go to my wishlist here: https://www.amazon.com/hz/wishlist/ls/TAO5QQQYZRM2?ref_=wl_share
THANK YOU so much for all of your support! Here’s to another creative year!

Innovation Lab: with Mrs. Thompson Greetings from the innovation lab!
It feels so good to be back! I have enjoyed seeing all the kids and diving right into our building challenges
The first week back to school we worked on an open mindset and teamwork. Many classes had build challenges where they had to work with their table team to create, for example, the tallest freestanding structure that can hold a tennis ball. Other classes build a device to help a penguin fly and miscellaneous lego build challenges. We are going to continue with open mindset and teamwork. In the weeks to come.
Something new this year is that we will have a cadet teacher in the classroom. She will be joining us in the innovation lab every other day from 1:30-2:30, so the second grade classes will get to know her very well! This is a student from the high school that wants to pursue a career in education. Her name is Miss Cici and she is eager to start this Wednesday.
As always, we love donations of any kind. We especially need toilet paper rolls and egg cartons. Thank you for saving your recycling and sending it in with your kids. We go through a lot of recycled materials.
Music: with Mr. Venner
We are off to a flying start in the music room at EHE! Kindergarten through fifth grade will be playing percussion instruments in Mallet Madness. Mallet Madness features mixed xylophone and drums in an easy to switch format that allows students to play 5 or 6 different instruments in a class period. Later in the month we will be playing Ukulele and will be learning new and challenging music games. Sixth grade will be exploring bass, drums and guitar. They will also be producing, recording, and editing short podcasts.
P.E. with Coach Parker
PE- Students have been working on making sure their bodies are safe while in the gymnasium. Spatial awareness and knowing where your body is at all times is an important part of PE. K-6th grade students have been doing various types of tag games that teach them how to chase, dodge and flee. Over the next few weeks we will start doing station rotation activities with (basketball, frisbee, football, volleyball, scoops, soccer). Our 2nd-6th graders will have the opportunity to play a game called capture the pin. This game uses teamwork, strategy, spatial awareness, and challenges students to use good sportsmanship.
Library with Mrs. Rice
It is great to have everyone back in school and checking out in the library! Over the course of the first two weeks of school, we have had 989 checkouts from the library! This is great compared to last year when we had 862 checkouts! Each class from Preschool to 6th grade have been reviewing Library Expectations, Book Care Rules, and the Process of using a Shelf Marker when checking out. In the upcoming weeks, we will be discussing the Mark Twain, Truman, Building Block, and Show Me Reader Nominees for the 2022-2023 school year! Keep encouraging your student to read and if you need resources or suggestions feel free to reach out to me via email: ricel@smithville.k12.mo.us!
Happy Reading!
Dismissal Reminders
Our dismissal is working really well, thanks for your patience as we train up our students and practice our procedures. A few reminders:
- If putting a child in a car or booster seat, please get the child and then pull into a parking spot.
- If you check a student out at the end of the day, even just 5 minutes early, they will have a partial absence in PowerSchool.
