Planning for the 2019-2020 School Year
In order to ensure that this process emphasizes each child as well as the class as a whole, we will not be accepting parent requests for specific teachers. We always welcome your input including feedback on your child’s ideal learning environment and will accept recommendations on a setting that will maximize his or her learning needs, but we will not accept requests for a specific teacher or for social placements (including students being placed with specific friends) for next year.
Mrs. Johansen has the final decision on placement, so please refrain from making recommendations to staff members. You can contact Mrs. Johansen if you would like to discuss your child’s individual learning styles and needs and your input will be taken into consideration.
We are asking that you trust our staff and the process that we utilize to place your students—all of our decisions will be made with the best interest of all of the children at Sanborn.

Holiday Secret Shop Chair Needed
"The Secret Shop is one of the best-attended Sanborn PTA events every school year. Kids LOVE buying inexpensive gifts for their families, friends, and teachers at the Shop. It is held the first Saturday in December, with set-up taking a few hours the evening beforehand. This event requires a lot of hands to make it successful, and the Sanborn Staff always generously offer their time for cashiering and wrapping presents for the kids the day of the event. The person (or people) overseeing this event will ensure there are plenty of gifts for the kids to pick from, make sure the items ordered for the event are all priced for sale, update existing flyers for backpacks, and will help transform the gym into a Winter Wonderland. Anyone willing to help organize will have significant support and guidance from past organizers. The time commitment is one hour in May, roughly three hours of set up in December the Friday before the event, and four to five hours at the event, which is normally the first Saturday in December."
Please contact Melanie Santostefano (preselect@sanbornpta.org) if you are interested in learning more!

Position:
MILE Primary Teacher
Years at Sanborn:
15 years
Why did you become a teacher or why did you want to work in a school?I come from a large family and was the oldest of all of my cousins. I often took care of my siblings and younger cousins, so spending time with children became a natural part of life. Growing up, I imagined myself going into education, but wasn't exactly sure what type of education I wanted to pursue. In college, I had a job as a lifeguard at a pool that was in a school for students in self-contained Special Education. I remember watching these kids swimming with the school staff and becoming more and more excited each time they came to the pool. It prompted me to take an Introduction to Special Education class and I fell in love. That little life guarding job in college changed my life.
What inspires you?
My students and their families. These little kids face such challenges on a daily basis and don't let it get them down. They are small warriors that have overcome some health and physical challenges that most people couldn't dream of.
What is your favorite quote?
I have so many! The one that first comes to mind is a simple one, but we say it often in my house: "Find the good."

What inspires you?
Children overcoming a once believed impossible obstacle, and enjoying the process.
What is your favorite quote?
