Term 2 and Semester 1 come to a close this week. A highlight of our last week was a full school assembly with the Mayor of the City of Joondalup as our special guest. The Honourable Albert Jacob shared with students the value of community and their capacity to shape it. Mayor Jacob also presented an award to Caitlin Nihill for her judged first place community artwork to be displayed on the Yagan Square tower. Thank you to the Mayor and a huge congratulations to Caitlin on her achievement.

Sport achievements were also celebrated at the assembly and included:

  • The Athletics Individual Champions received their medals.
  • The Golden Bear Award for the best spirit and participation went to Brigid House
  • The Athletics Champion House trophy to Francis House.

James Malone's achievement of being selected in the ACC All Star cross country team was also celebrated. This is a brilliant achievement by James who is a student who consistently strives to be his very best.

Thank you to our Year 12 students for bringing great life to the community this week with all the fundraising activities to raise funds for the OAKTREE Foundation. Lunchtimes have been entertaining with busking, cake stalls and a market place. Tomorrow is crazy sock day and on Friday, the big event and challenge for Mr Devlin’s Live Shave.

Welcome to Technology, Innovation, Design and Enterprise or as we call it TIDE! This semester we had the pleasure of providing an intensive jewellery course for all students currently enrolled in Years 8, 9 and 10 Jewellery and Glass, Year 11 and 12 Certificate III in Design Fundamentals and those students enrolled in the FlexEd Pathway.

Students constructed beautiful, silver, copper and brass bracelets, rings and a variety of other jewellery projects. With the assistance of our jeweller, Terry Edwards, students created twist rings, bezel set cabochon rings and bespoke pieces which can be viewed at the Prendiville Gallery during the last week of this term.

TIDE includes multiple workshops that cater for woodwork, glasswork and jewellery manufacture. The classroom atmosphere is structured to give guidance but relaxed enough to encourage students to use their imagination.

The gallery is open between 8.30am and 4.00pm every day and is manned by several of our very own friendly Flex Ed business students. Come and visit!

Year 9 Jewellery, Glasswork and Three Dimensional Design

This term, our talented Year 9 Technology, Innovation, Design and Enterprise (TIDE) students were given the opportunity to ‘reflect’ on their individuality by designing and creating fused glass mirror frames. The students are completing a course in Jewellery, Glasswork and Three Dimensional Design and were given the task to develop and refine their glass working process and production skills relating to the manufacture of bespoke glasswork. Each student was encouraged to combine ingenuity, problem solving skills and creative expression to transform their ideas into one off, highly original fused glass mirror frames.

This project highlights the range of unique and imaginative perspectives held by students at Prendiville Catholic College and will be on display in the Prendiville Gallery from 2 July and throughout Term 3. The Prendiville Gallery is open school days from 8.30am - 4.00pm.

The Education Support senior students are learning about menu planning and budgeting in preparations for their end of year camp. On Friday we planned our lunch menu - burgers and scones. The team went to the local IGA to buy the ingredients and took them back to the ESU to cook. The verdict: "It was like heaven and tasty".

It’s that time of the year again where we throw open our College doors (and arms) to Italian exchange students. This year Prendiville will be hosting five young people from Italy for eight weeks between 29 June and the end of August. The host students are:

  • Anupa Benoy (Yr 11) hosting Greta Servadei from Ravenna
  • Helena Medic (Yr 11) hosting Cristina Morciano from Lecce (in the south)
  • Harry O’Donnell (Yr 10) hosting Francesco Pinna (from Ivrea, in the north near Torino)
  • Samuele Benevolenti (Piacenza) and Davide Lanzi (Pesaro) are both being hosted by ex-Prendiville student Millie Fee and her parents.

It is always an exciting time for our Prendiville students to host and make friends with someone from the other side of the world. These experiences can be life changing and it’s lovely to see that these relationships, forged across the globe, continue long after the eight weeks are over. Many past Prendivillians return to Italy to visit their exchange students and families in the years after school.

A huge thank you from the Italian Department to the wonderful families who open their homes and hearts to another teenager for eight weeks. Similarly, we thank the College Leadership Team and staff for accommodating these students and helping to make their time so memorable. We hope this year, like previous years, will be a truly unforgettable experience for you all.

During Week 8 Prendiville Time, the Leadership Programme was launched with the students. Students had the opportunity to investigate leadership qualities they admired in others and then take an online personality quiz where they could identify their personal strengths.

The students then completed an online leadership tool and related their personality strengths to their leadership style. Research has suggested school leadership programmes need to allow participation, inclusion and student voice. I have explained to the students that next year whether they take a formal leadership portfolio or not, in Year 12, they are the leaders of the school. Younger students look to them as the standard of behaviour and presentation. I have encouraged students to nominate for formal leadership roles as the College requires a group of student leaders who will work together as a ‘high performing team’. We need students with different and varied qualities, so the student population is represented by the best possible team.

In Week 9, the students had the Red Frogs present the topic ‘Party Culture’. The Red Frogs work with many schools and are present at leavers functions and many youth events and music festivals. The topics presented centred on making responsible choices and students were presented with the possible outcomes of safe and unsafe choices.

Winter CAS Finals and Results

Congratulations to all Winter CAS teams for the outstanding effort and commitment this season. Students have again shown fantastic sportsmanship throughout the season, with other schools commenting on how nice it is to verse Prendiville teams. Parents, coaches and students have highlighted the benefits of the CAS competition for our students and the opportunities it provides to develop new friendships, experiencing healthy competition, coping with winning and losing and developing a sense of membership within the College.

Prendiville finished the winter season with four premiership flags from the Year 7B Netball team, Year 7 AFL team, Year 8/9 AFL team and Senior Girls Soccer team. The Year 8/9 Boys AFL team will continue through to the Eagles Cup competition and the Senior Girls Soccer team will continue through to the ACC Championship. All other teams finished in the top 4 in the competition.

Big picture

Prendiville has won both the summer and winter CAS competitions and therefore the overall CAS competition for 2019. Well done to all of the students and coaches involved, the time and dedication is appreciated.

ACC Championship

The Senior Boys Soccer team, Senior Girls Soccer team and the Senior Girls Netball team have finished 1st or 2nd in the CAS competition and have therefore made it through to the ACC Championship. The teams will cross over with other sub-association winners in a knock out style competition. We wish the teams and coaches the best of luck.

Athletics Training

Athletics training will commence in Week 2 next term. Training sessions will be held before school from 7.00am - 8.15am on Wednesdays and Fridays. All events will run on both days throughout next term except for hurdles which will only run on Friday mornings with specialist coach, Lyn Foreman. Kylie Wheeler will also coach a number of events next term.

A roster for specialised sessions will be available on the Sportal page. All students are invited to training, however students who have been listed in the draft team are encouraged to attend in preparation for the ACC Carnival in Week 9. These students have been notified and a draft is available on the Sportal page so that students can see which events to train for. Students who show commitment to training and show interest in being a part of the final team will be invited to an Athletics twilight meet in Week 5 next term. This will give students the opportunity to compete for selection into the final ACC squad if they have not already been selected.

Interhouse Surfing Carnival

The Interhouse Surfing Carnival has been postponed to Saturday 3rd August. The carnival will be held at Trigg Beach with briefing commencing at 6.30am for competitors. Heats will remain the same as previously organised. The event will finish at 1pm. We hope to see families and members of the community at the carnival supporting our surfing and bodyboarding students.
