Phoenix News
Collegiate Academy at TCC Northeast
September 29, 2019
A Message from the Director
Parents and Students,
Monday night was a wonderful time for our Phoenix Family. We had former students, parents and current students and parents, along with many GCISD district leaders and TCC NE leaders and faculty. As much fun as it was to think about where we've been, I'm even more excited about where we are going. This year we have a fantastic parent club that did so much to make the evening a success. Thank you to Sally Vereala, Lisa Lynn, Ronnie Rhode, Yvonne Aguirre, Dora Lane and the over 50 other parent volunteers! You went above and beyond in everything you did. THANK YOU! If you would like to purchase some Phoenix Wear, please see the information later in the newsletter. The best way to tell people about our school is to wear the Phoenix shirts and hats around our community!
Thank you to all who attended and PhoenixON!

PSAT Testing

SAT Testing
Seniors who signed up by the deadline will be taking the SAT at TCC on Oct. 16. This is a first for Collegiate Academy, and we are looking forward to it. Seniors should be working through test prep strategies every day to get ready for Oct. 16. Need help? Talk to your Pathways teacher.
SCHOOL COUNSELOR CHRONICLES
Senior Graduation Plan Meetings: I've met with 100% of our senior class and we've created a plan that gets them across the stage at graduation and gives them an opportunity to earn some more college hours in the meantime as well. If your student is a senior and they're still confused please reach out to me and we can work together to get on the same page!
Junior Four Year Plan Meetings: These have begun and are in their early stages. I'll be meeting with students during their study halls, Pathways classes, and any other times I spot them in the hallways. If you'd like to be involved in the creation of the four year plan for your student please let me know and we can set up a time that works for all of us!
Sophomore Four Year Plan Meetings: These will likely begin in the next week or two. Considering these students only have one year under their belt there is a lot more flexibility with their scheduling and therefore we can get creative with their electives and the timing of those classes. If you'd like to be involved in the creation of the four year plan for your student please let me know and we can set up a time that works for all of us!

Freshman Parents
Freshman Parents/Guardians:
Parents, we need your support so that your child is successful in their college classes. It takes all of us to make sure that they are successful! Please check their college grades regularly. I check grades at least once a week in Pathways. Here is a list of items that you can go over with your student:
1. Ensure that they are completing their VHL, Vista Higher Learning homework. This is their online Spansh homework. They are allowed several attempts on each assignment, so this should be helping, not hurting their grade.
2. Sign up for Remind 101. I send out reminders to students about upcoming tests and grade checks. If you sign up, you will get reminders as well. It's a great conversation starter! It's easy....
Just text one of the following codes to 81010.
Monday/Wednesday 2nd period: @2432dd
Monday/Wednesday 4the period: @c8c6e8
Tuesday/Thursday 1st period: @9ec7k23
Tuesday/Thursday 3rd period: @fcbfdek
3. Check your student's TCC Blackboard regularly. Since your student's college grades are not on Skyward, you need to check their grades on Blackboard. We also have grade checks in class on Wednesdays and Thursdays.
Please email me if you have any questions or concerns. Your student can be successful! We just need to work together to ensure their success!

TSI Testing Policy
Next week students who have not yet passed all 3 TSI tests will receive a hard copy of the TSI Testing policy for the 2019-2020 school. This policy will be distributed in the Pathways classes. We are asking parents and guardians to please review the hard copy of the testing policy with their student, sign it, and send it back to school with your student. Signed policies may be given to your student’s Pathways teacher. The policy will help students focus on the tests that they need at different stages of their associate degree. If you have any questions about your student’s progress in completing the Reading, Writing, or Math TSI test, please email Kristinia Haney at kristinia.haney@gcisd.net

District Communication Contact Information
There may be instances where we need to send emergency communication via email, phone call and/or text message. Please make sure that your contact information is updated in Skyward. If your information is updated in Skyward, but you are not receiving campus communication, please send your name, students name, contact information and campus to info@gcisd.net.
Bus Rules
While traveling in GCISD buses, we want to ensure a safe ride for all passengers and meet your travel needs. All luggage, equipment or carry on items must be stored underneath a seat and may not block the aisle or emergency exit. If possible, encourage students and staff not to take items that won't fit under a seat. Storing things in a seat, whether attended or not, can become projectiles if the bus has to stop quickly. If you have items that cannot fit under a seat or more items than space available on the bus, please contact Cynthia Patterson at 5593, or at cynthia.patterson@gcisd.net to help with arrangements. Additionally, to keep our buses in good condition please make students aware that they may not wear cleats or other shoes or footwear that can damage the bus floor.
Student Accident Insurance
This is an affordable, full excess, accident only policy for students that will help offset the rising medical costs and deductibles required by insurance carriers under your current health plans. To view more, click here.
Notes from the Attendance office:
Contact Amy Silva-Adams for Attendance questions.
817-515-6775
If a student must be absent from school a parent/guardian should call attendance or send an email each day to report the absence. I will also accept a note from the parent/guardian the day the student returns to school.
If a student is missing for a doctor's appointment, it is very important to always get a note from the doctor and present it when signing into school or returning the following day. You or your physician may email the doctor's note directly to me.
