News from Mrs. Drudy's 2nd Grade
"We exist so children can excel."
Greetings from Room #11
Whew! This week has been a whirlwind. As you might guess, much of what we've done revolves around procedures, procedures, and more procedures. Trust me, though, the students--and their teacher--will reap huge benefits from this. I will tell you just as I've told Mrs. Sourbeer: This has been the best first week of school I've experienced in my nearly two decades-long teaching career! Your children are wonderfully polite, and it just means so much to me. I have high expectations for 2019-2020 school year, and I am pleased to have you working alongside me to make it so.
Aside from learning procedures, we have done a great deal with getting to know you activities and community-building. Pictures of these types of activities can be enjoyed below. It just means so much for a child to feel safe in a classroom environment and trustful enough of classmates to take risks in his/her learning. I have been purposeful in sharing the stories with wonderful examples of students doing the right thing and treating each other right. Also important, I've been making certain that students know that mistakes are how we learn. I've assured them that no one will make more mistakes this year than I will.

Language Arts
Weekly Concept: Friends Help Friends
Essential Question: How do friends depend on each other? This year, your child will be learning the Indiana Academic Standards in Reading/Language Arts from the McGraw-Hill Wonders reading series. Each week, your child will have both whole group reading instruction and exposure to stories aimed at his or her individual reading level. This week our class will be focusing on the ways friends help one another. We will talk about the many ways for friends to depend on one another and have fun together.
Also each week, we will be introduced to spelling words that fit into patterns. Your child can expect 15 phonics based words and 5 challenge words. Since many parents like to have these words for study over the weekend, students will always be given their words on Friday. They will then have a "spelling bubble" quiz on Tuesday, a pretest on Wednesday, and the final test on Friday. Should students master the pretest on Wednesday (including the challenge words), then (s)he will not have to take the Friday test. Those who need extra practice will have spelling homework that evening. In all cases, the challenge words will be offered up as "bonus" points. The words for next week are as follows:
Phonics Words: Short a, i
1. has
2. wag
3. bad
4. six
5. will
6. sat
7. had
8. fix
9. him
10. if
11. can
12. hit
13. why
14. for
15. help
Challenge Words
16. flag
17. than
18. ship
19. thin
20. chip
