a note from your director

Wow, what a week we just wrapped up!!! It was a roller coaster of excitement! From after-school activities being cancelled due to severe weather, to the school being evacuated due to a fire on campus, to our bands and Winter Guards having incredible success stories! Let’s break it down before we look ahead!

We all know about the weather and the dryer fire, so let’s fast forward to the good stuff! Johnson sent three Bands to Pre-UIL on Thursday of this past week. All three bands came away with superior ratings from the judges and received incredible feedback in their final preparation for the official UIL Concert and Sight-Reading Evaluation. This week all of our bands' hard work will but put to the test by a panel of six Judges. Our Sub-NonVarsity, and our Non-Varsity will perform on Tuesday, and our Varsity will perform on Wednesday. Here is the full schedule, and the performances are free to attend and watch! This is the first year that Johnson is eligible to receive a Sweepstakes from UIL. Let’s wish them the best of luck this week. We also want to remind everyone that we will be wearing our formal Tuxedos and Dresses for UIL. You should have picked up your items last week to have them hemmed. If you did not, they may be picked up Monday during school or immediately after school. Also, please note that Wind Ensemble will have rehearsal starting at 5:30 p.m. at the Hays CISD Performing Arts Center on Monday, March 28th. They will also have morning practice there on Tuesday the 29th at 8:00 a.m., and will need to be dropped off that morning at the PAC by 7:45 AM. They will be bused back to JHS in time for their 2nd period classes, so no school will be missed.

This past weekend our Johnson Winter Guards made history! It is a great accomplishment to have a Winter Guard qualify and advance to the TCGC State Championships! To have two groups advance is incredible! That is what just happened! Our Junior Varsity qualified and advanced and with an incredible performance finished as the Bronze Medalist in their division! Put this in perspective - of the 11 groups in their division at the state championships they were the only Non-Varsity group competing and still finished in 3rd place! Congratulations to them!!

Next up is our Varsity Winter Guard! Or should we say, the 2021 - 22 TCGC Scholastic Open State Champions!! Just to take this a step further, in a contest where many of the groups were separated by hundredths of a point, the Johnson Varsity won their division by a spread of over 4 full points! What an accomplishment! Let’s take a moment to celebrate our incredible students and their accomplishments. But don’t celebrate too long as our Varsity Winter Guard must get immediately back to work as they will be leaving this week to travel Dayton, Ohio, where they will compete in the Winter Guard International World Championships!

We are going to end this weeks letter with one last CONGRATULATIONS!! It truly is: A Great Day To Be A Jaguar!
