Note from the Principal
Dear Mustang Families,
What a wonderful start to the school year! We thank you for your participation in Mustang Roundup and supporting your child with the start of this school year. You have set the stage for your child by letting him/her know that education is important to you and we thank you. As students get back into the routine of school life, we value the partnership that we will create with you. We sincerely believe that our partnership will foster a positive school experience that will make a difference in the lives of our students.
The students will be taking the Measures of Academic Progress (MAP) September 7th-8th. We give students MAP tests to determine students’ instructional level and to measure academic growth throughout the school year, and from year to year in the areas of reading and math. Please see the MAP letter in this newsletter for more detailed information.

Social Emotional Learning - Second Step Curriculum in PRO (1st Period)
In September, we’ll begin Second Step® Middle School, a research-based social-emotional learning program designed to improve students’ social-emotional skills, such as emotion management, impulse control, problem solving, and empathy. Second Step skills and concepts are designed to help students both in and out of school. These lessons will take place in PRO Time (1st period) and will be taught by the classroom teacher about once a week. The topics include:
Mindsets and Goals: Students learn how to develop a growth mindset and apply research-based goal-setting strategies to their social and academic lives.
Recognizing Bullying and Harassment: Students learn how to recognize bullying and harassment, stand up safely to bullying, and respond appropriately to harassment.
Thoughts, Emotions, and Decisions: Students learn how to recognize strong emotions and unhelpful thoughts and apply strategies to manage their emotions and reduce stress.
Managing Relationships and Social Conflict: Students learn strategies for developing and maintaining healthy relationships, perspective-taking, and dealing with conflict.
Second Step – Parent Resources:
Parent Teen Connect Website: Tips about Screen Time, Independence, Responsibility, Communication, Etc.
Summary of September Second Step Lessons & Parent/Guardian Follow-up Questions:
