The Reticular Activating System
*Our Brain’s FOCUS FILTER*
It sits at the base of our brain. (shown in red) It filters out noises, information and distractions
that we do not need to focus on. Our environment typically consists of over 100,000 pieces of information “floating” around at any given time. Our brain can only process a small amount. The reticular activating may let in up to 40 environmental pieces of information at a time. Sights, sounds, feelings etc filter through our Reticular Activating System (RAS) all the time. Most pieces of information around us are filtered OUT. The GREAT news is that we can “aim” our focus and “open” our RAS to things that we know are important and need our attention. We can increase our ability to see things around us that we CHOOSE to focus more on. A great example is when we choose to see things to be grateful for in every situation, then our RAS allows us to see MORE things around us with which we can feel grateful for. 💖
Attendance Moment: Take an Active Role
Stay involved with your child's daily experiences at school by asking how the school day went, and then listening carefully to what your child shares with you; both the successes and struggles.
