California State Testing

From May 2 - May 19, children in grade 3-5 will be participating in the Smarter Balanced Summative Assessments, which are part of the California Assessment of Student Performance and Progress (CAASPP) System.

In order to ensure success, please make sure that your student:

  • Eats a good breakfast

  • Attends school on time, everyday

  • Goes to bed early

Why is this test important?

This test was created with teacher input to…

  • Measure how well your child has mastered the skills and content in mathematics and English language arts at his or her grade level

  • Align with the instruction that takes place in the classroom everyday

  • Assess critical thinking, analytical writing, and problem solving skills, which are needed for success in college and a 21st century career.

What should I expect after my student takes the test?

A report will be mailed home that shows how students are doing in each area and where they need help. Depending on the student’s needs, teachers can use this information to provide targeted help to students to address their needs.

But remember, the results from this test aren’t meant to tell the whole story. Your child’s scores are meant to be one of several ways for you and your child’s teacher to see how your student is progressing in school. Test scores, along with student report cards and teacher’s observations of your child’s performance in the classroom, are used together to form a complete picture of your child’s achievement.

Where can I learn more?

I also encourage you to take a look at a practice test for your child’s grade level. The practice tests are posted on the California Department of Education’s Smarter Balanced Practice Tests Web page at http://www.cde.ca.gov/ta/tg/sa/practicetest.asp. To find out more details about the Smarter Balanced test, visit http://www.testscoreguide.org/ca.

New COVID Decision Tree

Covid guidelines have changed. Please see the new document released on February 28, 2023 below

Community Feedback on Services for Students

Every school district in the state of California is required to develop a Local Control Accountability Plan (LCAP) to outline the actions and services that will support student academic, social, and behavioral achievement. We call our LCAP the Blueprint for Educational Excellence and Innovation. The LCAP must go through an annual revision process to ensure that students, parents, teachers, and staff members have the opportunity to provide feedback on the current actions and services and to make suggestions for additional actions and services that students need to reach their full potential as learners. We are hosting community forums and a district-wide survey to capture this feedback. Please see the information below to share your voice and engage in our annual LCAP revision process.

Community Forums:

  • Virtual Community Forum - March 1st from 5:30-6:30 pm, Click HERE for a Zoom link

  • In-Person Community Forum - March 7th from 5:30-6:30 pm at the Vista Innovation Center

T.H.E. Leadership Academy as a Community School

T.H.E. Leadership Academy will be applying to be a Community School in the 23-24 school year. We are excited for the opportunity to be a Community School because Community Schools are designed to support learning and prioritize the well-being of children and adults. The foundation for improving academic opportunities and outcomes can only be realized through centering relationships, valuing the expertise of students and families as partners, and creating racially just, relationship-centered school climates and cultures.

Please check out this brief 3 minute video explaining Community Schools in both English and Spanish.

School Accountability Report Card

The School Accountability Report Card is now available for review here and a hard copy will be made available upon request at our front office.

Transitional Kindergarten and Kindergarten Pre-Enrollment Opens March 1st for 2023-2024

Parents and guardians can reach out to any VUSD elementary school for assistance with the pre-enrollment process. Click here for information about the TK/K Enrollment process, and click here for frequently asked questions about TK/K Enrollment. Enroll early to secure your spot!
