NHS Band & Guard
Week of October 19, 2020
CONGRATULATIONS and THANK YOU!
Congratulations to our senior class, and all of the members of the Newtown High School Band and Guard on a successful and special event last Saturday! Our 24th Annual Grasso Festival was certainly not what we all wanted this year, but thanks to town leadership, school administration, Kurt Eckhardt and Staff, and all students and their families, it was a memorable Senior Celebration.
We are so fortunate to have such a dedicated group of families supporting this program. We would like to make special mention of moms and dads who played key roles in Saturday's success.
- Announcer - Frank LaBanca
- Chaperone help during the break - Erika Sandy and Sue White
- Crew "on the field" to secure the props during the performances - Charlie and Alenda Calderbank, and Andrew Paley
- Distribution of dress uniforms to seniors and siblings - Julie Mack
- Lunch for the band, guard, and staff - Shannon Mulligan and Cindy McGuire (thanks also to Ron and Diane Malin for pitching in as well)
- Photos on field - Tim White and Jon Miller
- Senior and family photos - Jon Miller and Dianna Pategas (AMAZING location too)
- Senior recognition on field - Betsy Krauss, Dianna Pategas, Bonnie Voegeli, and Laura Welch
- Senior recognition planning (certificates, frames, and key chains) - Shannon Mulligan
- Senior sashes - Betsy Krauss, Erika Sandy, and Sue White
- Stadium decoration and photo posters and banners - Bob and Tracey Elston
- Pit Dads who put away all of the props and drum major stands on Saturday night so that the students could enjoy senior night - Charlie Calderbank, Bob Fossum, and Jeff Timmons
THANK YOU FOR THE PROPS!
In just over a week, several Pit Crew members split up into two teams to build some amazing props for the show. These two teams built a cityscape and an "Ncredible" signal light.
- Building of "Ncredible" Signal - Andrew Paley, Mike Calorossi, Henry Voegeli. Decals provided by Tracey and Bob Elston.
- Building of the Cityscape - Jeff Timmons, Charlie Calderbank, Joe Diaspro, and Bob Fossum. Cityscape painters included Jeff Timmons, Dianna and Greg Pategas, with touch ups from Charlie Calderbank and Bob Elston
We introduced online AirGrams at this year's event. Just in case you missed some of them, they can be found here.
Photos from the event can be viewed at this link. Thank you to Jon Miller for capturing these special memories!
And finally, a heartfelt thank you to Kurt Eckhardt, Chris Carley, Adam Twombly, Grace McKinley and the rest of the NHS Band and Guard Staff. We appreciate all that you are doing to make this season a meaningful experience for our students!

Two Volunteer Opportunities
TRUNK OR TREAT:
- As we work to finalize a safe approach to the Trunk-or-Treat event, we are seeking the following:
- 5-6 people interested in decorating their car for the evening
- 2-3 people to help collect, package, and safely distribute candy
- We will do a candy collection at drop off and pick up, please look for that coming soon
- Please email info@nhsbandguard.com if you are willing to help out with this event.
NEW ROLE - QUARTERMASTER:
Do you have extra space at home and are you looking to help the band with an easy, but important task? All of the materials that are needed for different events throughout the year are stored in bins. Since many of these items are food related, we cannot store them in the containers near the field because mice love to find homes (even in sealed bins). There about 15-20 bins. We need someone who can store these bins and help to keep track of the inventory before and after events. This is a GREAT behind-the-scenes role for someone who wants to help but not be out front. It is also a very limited time commitment. Please email info@nhsbandguard.com if you are interested in helping with this role.
Heads Up, Calendars Out
