Week of 11/29/21 - 12/3/21
Letter from Principal Nelson
Cougars-
Thanksgiving is truly the most inclusive American holiday and is all about being with family and friends and giving thanks. Setting time aside to acknowledge you and your family’s good fortune the past year is a special moment and something we should work towards doing during non-holidays. Family, food, football, and friends (the Four Fs) are the cornerstones of this week off, and we hope you get to spend as much time with all the above as you can bear. Feel free to indulge in any of the Four Fs, knowing that your body will have plenty of time to recover before we head back to campus on November 29th.
Make sure your student unplugs as much as possible and try to get h/her to read a book or magazine sans screen. Remind them that reading is not merely for academic purposes; it’s for pleasure. If they say they do not prefer it, simply tell them they just haven’t found the right book yet. Then, help guide them to a book or article geared towards their interests. If they ask you to use their Chromebooks to work on schoolwork or IXL, dissuade them from it and invite them to watch a movie with you instead.
High School Credit Courses: Recently, you may have received a letter from AISD about High School credit courses in Middle School and that you have until December 3rd to change the course to a middle school credit that will not show up on your student’s transcript. Please be mindful that this is for Algebra and Geometry classes. All other courses listed below have until the end of March to be classified as an MS credit course instead of an HS one.

Kammie Holmes Way: On Wednesday afternoon, we celebrated the life and legacy of our beloved teacher who passed away this summer, Kammie Holmes. Our Cougar dancers, led by Elizabeth Kalash, Orchestra, conducted by Carrie Miller, and Elizabeth Holzner’s Choir paid tribute to her memory by performing for all in attendance. It was a spectacular homage to her positive influence and kindness, which permeated the fifteen years she worked here throughout our campus. She was a force to be reckoned with and her light showed brightly on all who were fortunate enough to get to know her. She was the first smile our students saw in the morning and the last smile when they left. She put forth energy, effort, and enthusiasm into everything she was involved in. We spoke of the Kammie Holmes Way, which is being ready for anything and being present for everything and is now also the name of our crosswalk where she guided our students for so many years. We are so thankful we were allowed to spend time with her and so proud of our students who helped us honor her during this special celebration.
Thank you for allowing us to work with your student every day. We love their passion for learning, and it only ignites ours all the more. As a sign of our gratitude, we are attaching a helpful Thanksgiving Photoshoot guide to assist you during this most memorable holiday. Our photojournalism teacher, and jingle creator, Thomas Shoptaw, has put together a presentation to make sure your pics from this break are as crisp as your water chestnut stuffing and as fulfilling as your maple pecan pie. These tips and tricks are sure to eliminate any turkeys from your photoshoots. Enjoy!
