March 2024
Reminders
- Please decorate your Cowboy/girl boot and send it with your student. We are hanging them in the hallway!
- Please label everything! Jackets, water bottles, lunch boxes.
- Please send your child with a jacket every day for the next couple weeks. We try to go outside whenever possible and sometimes it is chilly!
- Please check your child's daily folder every day, sign each day, and empty every night.
- Make sure your child brings a spill-proof water bottle every day!

What are we learning?
Language Arts
Reading
We are continuing our unit called "Avid Readers." Students will learn the difference between being a "blah" reader and a "avid" reader. They will read books to learn new information and start reading poetry.
Writing
We are continuing our unit called "how-to" writing. They will be writing books to teach others how to do something. They will learn how to be detailed in their steps and make sure to include all steps in teaching someone how to do something.
Phonics
In Phonics, students are still reviewing letters/sounds. We have started using Elkonin boxes to build CVC words. Not sure what Elkonin boxes are? Click here to see!

Math
Joining & Separating
Students will learn how to join numbers using the sentence ___and ___ is ____ Example: 2 and 5 is 7.
Students will learn how to separate numbers using the sentence ____take away _____ is _____. Example: 6 take away 2 is 4. We will start using the addition (+) and subtraction (-) signs to make a number sentence.
Numeration
We will continue working on counting numbers up to 20. Students will have to build the number, count the objects or subitize numbers up to 10.
Comparing Numbers
Students will work on comparing numbers and using language such as greater than, less than and equal to. They will also have to generate a number that is greater than, less than or equal to another number.

What can you do at home?
- Review letter sounds.
- Practice writing CVC words. Example: bat, map, pig, jet, rug, mop
- Review the sight word list every night.
- Practice coming up with a story and writing the story using "first, next, then & last."
- Practice recognizing numbers and writing them (0-20).
- Count objects to 20.
- Practice counting to 100 by ones and tens.
- Practice counting backwards from 20 to 0.
