January 12th
Welcome Back
We started our week by getting excited to be back in school. As a class, we played a number of fun games to ignite the friendships that formed throughout the year. Each class also switched table seats, so we spent some time getting to know our new teammates. We drew four of the activities that we enjoyed over break and took turns sharing with our teams our favorite parts of winter break. As teams, we created team posters by making individual snowmen to create a snowman family. We did other team builders to get to know our new teammates and feel safe in the classroom.
Reading
In order to stay connected to our winter theme, we read The Snowy Day by Ezra Jack Keats. Students are doing a fantastic job of responding to the stories we read by using reading strategies. We are excited to see these reading strategies transfer to their independent and small group reading.
Have You Filled A Bucket?
As a part of reviewing rules and expectations in the classroom, we read Have You Filled a Bucket Today? As a class, we brainstormed ways to fill each others' buckets and ways to avoid dipping into someone's bucket. We sorted pictures that showed kids interacting with each other, and we needed to decide if it showed bucket filling or bucket dipping. We also illustrated ways to fill a bucket.
Measurement
This week and next we are wrapping up this unit by reviewing and assessing the measurement standards. Please ask your child to describe the measurable attributes of objects in relation to each other at home. We want students to be able to determine which object is taller/shorter, longer/shorter, heavier/lighter.
Buddies
We worked with our 6th grade buddies to create four goals for 2018. Each pair brainstormed appropriate goals for reading, math, writing, and a personal goal. We recorded these goals and look forward to sharing them with you!
Reminders
