The Crayola Experience is huge- the size of a football field. Currently we do not have a limit on the number of parents that can attend with their children, with a paid ticket. Chaperones will drive or car pool from the school to the location. We would love your help. We are also looking for additional help with coolers. The coolers with wheels are very helpful.

What we are learning
Sight Words and Words Their Way.
Sight Words-We will have a new list of sight words coming home on Monday. The words for List 19 are by, their, here, saw, call. We will test on FRIDAY. Please review last weeks words. Many students had problems with the words every and jump.
Words Their Way- Please don't have them glue their words on their take home mat until Thursday. They need to be moving the pieces around all week. For those students who have sorts with with words they will be expected to write 10 words of teachers choice (Blue and Black groups mainly).
Reading- Please continue to read at home for at least 20 minutes each night. Also, I-station is always a fun way for them to practice reading skills while playing fun games. We would appreciate it if you would have your child log in this weekend.
Monthly I-station will be given on Friday, February 1st. Please make sure your child is on time and if they have glasses, they wear them to school.
Language Arts- We are starting a new unit on writing a traditional letter . Your children will write expository and procedural. This could be work-related texts to communicate idea and information to a set audience for a reason such as a get job information, requesting information or resolving a conflict. This will lend itself to following direction and working on a set format.
Social Studies-are going to extend your child's knowledge on the historical figures such as George Washington, Abraham Lincoln, and Sam Houston. We will learn how these individuals impacted our history. We have already started the conversations about the founding fathers on coins and bills.
Math - We will be learning about place value understanding. We will be working on representing whole numbers to 120 using comparative language using symbols <,=,>. We will be practicing composing and decomposing numbers in multiple ways up to 120 to explore place value relationships. We will be representing numbers with objects, pictures, and expanded and standard form. We will have math homework this week to continue practice counting coin collections. It will be a 2-3 page packet that will be due on Friday.
Science - We will be beginning our unit on Seasons. Students will be learning the characteristics of each season; winter, spring, summer, and autumn/fall. They will be able to recognize that seasons occur on Earth in a repeating pattern.
Hot and Cold!
Snack
Class snacks can only be “healthy” snacks. First grade will allow students to have a snack. Students should be capable of eating their snack while listening or working on instructional activities. These snacks cannot be candy or dessert types (cookies, cupcakes, frozen treats, fruit cups with liquid, etc.). Water is the only drink allowed- we prefer insulated water bottles that do not sweat. With so many concerns over food in schools, it may be best to keep snack size to a minimum- please keep snacks no bigger than a playing card or 1/4 cup of dried goods. PLEASE be mindful of the students with severe food allergies.
Bad Weather-Snow and Ice
As we move into winter, it is important to know the school districts winter weather procedures. In the event of winter weather, the administration will consider the safety of our 53,000+ students and more than 6,000 employees in our 127-square mile district when making decisions about school closures.
LISD administrators will determine school cancellations or delays based on the safety of all students and staff district-wide.
If school is cancelled or delayed due to a weather-related event, parents and staff members will be notified via multiple platforms, including LISD’s parent callout system (Skylert), websites – including all campus websites – Twitter, Facebook and Instagram. For the most instantaneous notification, visit our website and/or follow us on Twitter.
Please know that LISD is working diligently to keep you informed as quickly as possible, but know that some forms of notification may be slightly delayed due to the demands of mass messaging.
As always, LISD will keep parents, students and community members informed with the most up-to-date information through these communication platforms. LISD thanks you in advance for your patience in the event of a winter weather situation.
Cold and Flu Season is HERE!
Your child’s health is of great importance. It is that time of year when colds, flu and viruses run wild in schools, churches, and other public places. We will take every precaution to have a healthy and safe environment. Please consider getting a flu shot for yourself and your child. Having the flu is not any fun and can be life threatening for young children.
We would like you to consider keeping your child home if they have fever, diarrhea and vomiting. It is requested that students be symptom free for 24 hours before returning to school. Please don't give your child a fever reducer and send them to school. Our bodies create a fever to fight viruses and to give us a warning that we are sick. When you send a child to school sick you will be impacting 20 plus families in addition to the teachers and their families. Teachers don't like missing days of school due to illness.
If your child becomes ill while at school, we will take them to the school nurse. The nurse will evaluate your child and will contact you to let you know if you need to pick your child up. Please keep in mind the only person on campus that can give any medication is our school nurse
