The Sophomore Scene with Team 2019
February 2017
3rd Quarter is flying by!
As our team talked this past week about upcoming events in February, it was hard to believe January had gone by so quickly. Only four weeks remain in the 3rd quarter! The end of February also brings about the first round of Grade 10 ISTEP testing. We will have a team meeting with our students on February 27th and English testing will begin on the 28th. Our English and Math teachers have been working hard to prepare them for the upcoming testing. For Team 2019 these Grade 10 Math and English ISTEP tests will serve as their graduation qualifying exam, so attendance on testing dates and effort by the students will be paramount. I will send out a shorter update email near the end of the month with exact details on testing dates/times/etc.
I have included below some important reminders about student expectations that I would ask that you read carefully and speak with your students about. Thank you for all of your help and support.
Sincerely,
Adam Poliskie
Assistant Principal Team 2019
Student Expectations and Guidelines
My first reminder is about appropriate language. It is important that we are preparing our students to be successful in life after high school and carrying themselves professionally and communicating with appropriate language is an important part of this process. From our student handbook:
“No student shall use profane, vulgar, racially or religiously derogatory, abusive, or otherwise
disrespectful language in any school building areas during school hours or at any school-sponsored or related activities or events."
My next reminder is our lanyard policy. This policy is an important part of what helps us to make BHS a safe and successful learning environment:
Our practice of wearing a lanyard and ID at all times is an expectation and considered part of our appearance guidelines. Repeated violations of this guideline will result in consequences from the team. Lanyards and ID’s are required to enter each class- every period -- and should remain on at all times throughout the day. Replacement lanyards and ID’s may be purchased in the Team office. Lanyards: $2 ID: $3
It seems as though we have had an increase in the number of consequences being assigned during the 3rd quarter because of students who are tardy to class. The following steps are used when students are tardy:
1st tardy = verbal warning
2nd tardy = verbal warning
3rd tardy = parents contacted
4th tardy = 30 minute school detention; parents contacted
6th tardy = Friday School Tier I * parents contacted
8th tardy = Friday Schools Tier II * parents contacted
Lastly, please speak with your students about our cell phone policy:
Students are permitted to have cell phones in school and use them before school until 7:50 a.m. Cell Phones and ear buds are not permitted in the hallways or classrooms between 7:50-2:50. Cell Phones are permitted in the Café during lunch periods. During school hours, cell phones can be used only when requested by the teacher for an educational purpose. Any other use of a cell phone during school hours will result in disciplinary action. It is not appropriate at any time during school or school related events that a cell phone be used to invade the privacy of another student.
If a cell phone/ electronic device rings, vibrates, or is used for any reason without teacher permission, or is visible anytime during class time your teacher may confiscate the device without question or argument. Earbuds are considered part of this policy. Earbuds that are insight will be confiscated and this will also include the device they are connected to. We will follow our routine consequences for these types of violation:
- 1st Offense – Student will pick up their phone from their Team Office at the end of the day
- 2nd Offense – Parent must pick up the phone
- 3rd Offense – Parent must pick up the phone and progressive consequences will begin
*Please be advised that if the teacher believes this device was being used to violate our Academic Integrity Policy the contents on the phone may be reviewed.
Refusal to surrender your cell phone/electronic device when asked is considered defiance. Defiance will result in disciplinary consequences starting with an immediate placement in In-School Suspension (ISS) and not limited to Out-Of-School Suspension (OSS) depending on the circumstances. The phone will be confiscated and parents will be contacted to pick up the phone.
Updates from the Guidance Department
Scheduling Efforts:
Please remind your students that over the next couple weeks, if she hasn't already, Mrs. Frazer will be meeting with each student individually to review their schedules for next year and look at their graduation plan progress. At this time she will update them on their progress towards their diploma choice and make sure there are no questions about next year's schedule.
Any changes could still be made to those scheduling requests prior to spring break so please don't hesitate to call or email Mrs. Frazer if you have any questions!
Hendricks County College and Career Fair
Team 2019 Parents,
The Hendricks County College & Career Fair is taking place on Thursday, February 23rd, from 5:00 - 8:00 p.m. at the Hendricks County Fairgrounds and Conference Complex in Danville. Attached is a flyer and for more information regarding the fair, visit: https://hendrickscollegenetwork.org/college-career-fair/ . This is a great opportunity to speak with college and career representatives. Over 100 schools and resources will be there.
Also, in an effort to save students time at college fairs with filling out information cards from different colleges, we have attached a flyer highlighting www.gotocollegefairs.com in which students can fill out an online registration form. Please see below for some information we received from Go to College Fairs. If your son/daughter is planning to attend the Hendricks County College & Career Fair, we encourage them to do this! Not only will the process be streamlined for the colleges, this free service for the student will increase efficiency at the college fair. It is preferred to register prior to the fair.
Here is more info that we received about this student barcode registration program:
This process gives students access to a free online registration page where they can create a profile, with more detailed information and even elaborate on interests, extra-curricular activities, special accomplishments, etc. about themselves. It generates a personalized barcode, which contains their contact information that students print and take to the fair. Institutions attending the fair with a scanning device can easily collect this data. This procedure enhances secure data sharing, reduces the use of interest cards and increases face to face interaction between student and institution representative.
How does this work?
- Students access www.gotocollegefairs.com website
- Click on the “Student Register Now” button
- Select state and choose the fair to attend
- Complete the registration form (Students may decide to complete only mandatory questions)
- Check the “terms and conditions box” and submit the form
- The barcode is displayed – they print the barcode and they’re done!
We encourage students to register early without worry of misplacing their barcodes. Two days prior to the fair and on the day of the fair, a reminder email is sent to each registered student with a copy of their barcode attached.
Thank you,
Team 2019
AP Exam Registration
This year, students will register and pay for AP Exams online. Online Exam registration will begin on Wednesday, January 4, 2017 at 6:00 AM and end on Friday, February 24, 2017 at 11:00 PM. In order to register, click on the following link www.TotalRegistration.net/AP/150335.
To complete registration, students must answer all of the required questions. Registration is not complete until students have printed the pdf of the confirmation page that is provided at the end of registration. We know that parents may desire to register their students for exams. We strongly recommend that parents and students are both present while registering to ensure that the correct exams are ordered.
Brownsburg High School is excited to offer families the convenience of paying exam fees online at the time of registration. Please be sure to have a credit card or debit card available before beginning registration. If you have any questions, please contact Mr. Comer at bcomer@brownsburg.k12.in.us.
Semester 2 Academic Reminders
As we near the end of the 3rd quarter below are some reminders from Ms. Burke about making up missing assignments and getting extra help with classes. If your student is struggling please make sure to reach out to the teachers and contact Ms. Burke as soon as possible.
Missing Assignment Information
When looking at your student's PowerSchool, you can identify which assignments are missing by finding any orange squares next to the assignments listed, or the assignments that have a "0" in the grade column. Once you have identified which ones are missing, you can then reach out to the individual teachers to see what your student can do to turn in the missing assignments.
