Middle School: After learning about Jean Michel Basquait, students created their own Neo-Expressionist portrait. It was challenging for some students to make something that was not planned and made to look "ugly". These expressive portraits will be hanging in the yellow hall near the main office.
ESL with Ms. Rivera
After working on our paragraph writing skills... off to the races. Who said writing can't be fun?
Dance with Ms. Harrison
As we enter a new month, the Elementary Dance students will be "traveling" to South Africa, Zimbabwe, AND Guinea, West Africa.
In honor of Black History Month, the dancers have begun learning a traditional dance from the countries of South Africa and Zimbabwe, called the Isicathulo (also known as the "Boot Dance.")
This dance was done by the men that worked in the gold and diamond mines. It is a dance using primarily the hands and feet, making rhythmic patterns and sounds. I refer to this dance as the "grandfather" of Tap and Step Dancing. Ask your dancer for a "sneak preview!"
The dancers are learning the "Isicathulo" (also known as the "Boot or Gumboot Dance"). This dance was done by the men that worked in the gold and diamond mines. It is a dance using primarily the hands and feet, making rhythmic patterns and sounds. The students are finding that it can be challenging to "stomp and clap" together - individually AND as an entire class.
Our visit here is about to end shortly, and then we'll be off to visit Ghana and Guinea, West Africa. We're having a blast!
P.E. with Coaches Ellis and Hess
Hess will be doing Health Related Physical Fitness and my classes will be studying food and a healthy choices along with wufflle ball.
