Some thoughts for the starting school year

April 12, 2023
Intent to Re-Enroll for the 2023 - 2024 School Year
Today the Intent to Re-enroll forms were sent home to all PK - 4th grade students. If your child(ren) will be returning to Bush next year, then please complete the form and submit the required residency documents back in your child's red communication folder. If you're not returning, please check that box and return the form in your child's red communication folder.
Does your child have a sibling that will enter kindergarten in August?
If you have a child at Bush and you have a kindergarten student to enroll for next year, then complete the Intent to Re-enroll form and bring the following documents to the Bush front office: residency documents along with the kindergarten aged child's birth certificate, proof of immunizations, and your (the parent's) drivers license. You will need to complete the registration packet while we verify your documents. This is all you will need to do to register your kindergarten aged child for Bush, with no need to return for one of the May Kindergarten registration dates. (Please note this is not available from 11:00 a.m. - 11:30 a.m. or 1:00 p.m. - 1:30 p.m. as these are Ms. Rosales' break times.)
Intent to Re-enroll and kindergarten sibling registration is from Wednesday, April 12 - Thursday, April 20.
GT Results Were Sent Home Today!
The results of the GT testing completed by our first through fifth graders will be coming home in the Red Communication Folders today. If you requested that your child be tested, then please look for a packet with a cover sheet that has your child’s name and address on the front. In this packet you will find the qualified/did not qualify letter, your child’s GT matrix, the rubric used to score the matrix, and your child’s test reports for the achievement and abilities tests. Please keep these important documents for future reference. If your child did not qualify for the GT program this year, you may request that they be retested next fall when the applications come out. If your child did qualify, they will be placed into a GT homeroom for the 2023-2024 school year. If you have questions about your child’s scores, please reach out to your child’s teacher.
3rd-5th Gr. STAAR Testing
Next week we start the official state of Texas STAAR testing. Tuesday, April 18 and Wednesday, April 19 will be important days for our fifth graders and then our third and fourth graders as they take the STAAR Reading Language Arts assessment.
We will have a closed campus on these days which means we can't have parent conferences or parents coming up for birthday lunches. Parents are allowed to come to the office to submit their kindergarten sibling enrollment documents on these days.
Parents of third, fourth, and fifth graders should try and reschedule any doctor's or dentist appointments on these days as we need the students to have the entire day if needed for their tests. As for any school day, but especially on these days, please make sure your child gets a good night's sleep, eats breakfast, and arrives to school on time.
Our teachers have worked hard to teach the students and now is the students' time to show all they've learned this school year!

SEL with Ms. Jones
Mental health is important because it affects how your child thinks, feels, acts and learns.
It may seem that conversations surrounding mental health are becoming more open, but the stigma remains. Not talking about mental health is what leads to shame around it.
What better way to combat mental health stigma than through your children? Creating an open environment to talk about mental health at home will help lead to thoughtful conversations surrounding childrens’ issues.
When parents discuss mental health in a non-threatening manner, it gives children the confidence and terminology to start a dialogue. Children will feel empowered to reach out to a trusted family member, teacher, or friend when needed.
This week's printable: The Feeling Wheel By PositivePsychology.com
The Feeling Wheel is a simple printout with 72 feelings sorted into 6 groups: angry, sad, scared, joyful, peaceful, and powerful. Represented as a colorful pie, it can be an excellent tool for children who have difficulty articulating or expressing their feelings.
Handbook Highlights
Safe Morning Arrival
We're seeing some very unsafe and dangerous behaviors by parents during morning arrival.
- Parents walking through the small parking lot and then between the cars in the active carpool lane.
- Parents stopping their car on Westerloch Drive to let out their child in an active lane of traffic.
- Parents not using the sidewalks and crosswalks to get to school.
The carpool lane and Westerloch Drive are very busy in the morning. Please be a good role model for your child and all others watching you by taking a few extra minutes to be safe.
Parents and Birthday Treats
The Teacher Assistants are responsible for supervising the students in the cafeteria during lunch time. The Teacher Assistants are asking for parents' help in keeping the cafeteria calm and safe. Parents must follow these guidelines when visiting at lunch to pass out a birthday treat to their child's homeroom class and have lunch with their child.
- Only hand out the birthday treat to the students in your child’s homeroom class at the last 5 minutes of your child’s lunch.
- Birthday goodie bags are not handed out at lunch.
- Do not hand out any extra treats to any students in other classes.
- Only take your child (no other students may go) to eat at the hallway birthday table or at the courtyard table and understand that you will not be able to eat lunch in the cafeteria.
- Do not take pictures or videos in the cafeteria during lunch.
Parents not following these guidelines directly affects student behaviors in the cafeteria.
💡 SPECTACULAR SCIENCE 💡
The Spectacular Science Word for the week of April 10 is gravity.
Dress Code Reminders
Please make sure your child is following Bush Elementary's dress code guidelines. Bush Elementary's colors are red, navy, and white. Khaki pants, shorts, and skirts may also be worn. If a jacket, sweater, or sweatshirt are worn in the building throughout the day, then those items must follow dress code. Please also remember that only the Bush plaid may be worn, other plaids are not part of our dress code.
We're seeing many students wearing jeans with purposeful holes and/or tears and these type of jeans are not part of dress code. Only jeans that are a plain blue may be worn. Also, sweatpants or athletic pants are not part of the Bush dress code.
Finally, students must wear shoes that are safe for school with closed toes and closed heals. Crocs and sandals are not appropriate shoes for school and are not part of our dress code.
Please contact our Wrap Around Specialist, Maria Quevedo, if you're in need of dress code items. maria.quevedo@houstonisd.org
