Soledad High School Band performs at Elementary Schools
As a child, one of the most exciting things about moving up from Elementary to Middle School or Junior High is the opportunity to play in a band class. Outside of the thrilling opportunity to take a step away from monotonous schooling and make some noise in a band room, kids often miss all the other wonderful benefits of joining the band.
Purpose
Being part of a school band gives students a reason to play an instrument, and reason to keep getting better. The ability to be apart of a group that is motivated to perform at a peak level gives kids incentive to get better. In contrast, when a child is required to play an instrument because their parents make them or from their personal desires, the drive to get better comes from within oneself. Having a purpose helps provide a reason to play.
Friends
Based on the size of the school, bands can vary from 25-100 different kids with one purpose. This shared purpose and close proximity to others create a healthy way for kids to make friends. Especially as the band is broken into different sections where it is easier to get to know others that are apart of their same group.
Being apart of a Team
In addition to the ability to make special bonds and friendships with other band members, being apart of the band provides all the benefits that come from being on a team. For example, considering these kids are beginner trumpet players or oboe players, they work in unity and come across constructive teamwork building opportunities. These opportunities combined with the purpose of being the best band requires discipline to follow strict instruction.
Performances
In the end, a band simply wants to help students learn the beneficial life-long habits of performing at their highest level. The largest test or challenge bands have are their live performance when they must show everyone in attendance how well they can play together. Doing so tests kids mental abilities, and pushes them to take practice seriously.

SPECIAL PROJECTS DEPARTMENT
SUSD After School Program
Our ASES Program is available at our five elementary sites and at our middle school.
We offer snacks, homework/intervention assistance, and other enrichment activities such as physical education, art, science, and technology. Our ASES Staff continues to work with our children every school day until 6:00pm. Our ASES Staff is able to attend professional development and ASES Meetings to help strengthen the program for our students during the evenings and/or on Saturdays. As part of our ASES Program, our staff follows a continuous quality improvement cycle each year which includes assessing survey results and creating an action plan that is implemented to improve the quality of our program. I would like to send a special thank you to our ASES Staff for helping ensure our students are in a safe and positive environment each day when school ends!

Ever find a video for your students that’s just right? Perfect even?
You show it to them (or they watch it on their own). It engages them. Makes them think. Starts really great conversations.
A video can be the right tool to kickstart great learning.
That’s why we created TEACHFLIX. It’s a collection of videos – sorted into categories – that you can use with your students in class. We’ve found our own favorites – and curated suggestions from classroom teachers. It’s not a perfect, all-encompassing collection. But we like it. And we keep adding new videos to it!
If you love all of these TEACHFLIX resources, you should check out all we have for you at Ditch That Textbook! It’s full of free teacher resources, including teaching ideas, templates, tech tools, and more.
Scroll down the homepage to the “Explore the DTT blog” as a good starting point. Or choose “Templates” from the resources section in the top right.
All of this stuff might help you write your lesson plans for the next few days … or more! That’s our hope anyway!
A Message From SUSD Technology Department:
Due to changes in the Apple security settings on the Apple TVs, most of our classrooms have lost the ability to stream services such as Netflix and Hulu to their Apple TVs. We have consulted with Apple Engineers and the best solution will be to disable "conference mode" on your Apple TVs so that you have access to all of the streaming apps directly on the Apple TV.
We will be pushing this change to all Apple TVs district wide, so you will all now see a screen that looks similar to the one below when you turn on your Apple TV. It does include movie or show ads, so please keep that in mind. We recommend turning the actual TV off while not streaming if the new Apple TV home screen becomes a distraction to the students.
Please submit any tech requests if you have any issues using the new Apple TV home screen. We are here to assist. Have a great rest of your week!

What Are My Legal Responsibilities for ‘Child Find’?
The short answer: The Individuals with Disabilities Education Improvement Act of 2004, Known as IDEA 2004, requires that every state have a process for locating, identifying, and evaluating all children with disabilities who are in need of special education and related services. The process is referred to as “child find.” and general educators play an important role in referring students with suspected disabilities for special education evaluation. 34 CFR 300.111(a).
