K-8 SCHOOL NEWS
ART CONTEST ~ Scholars are invited to use any artistic medium—drawing, painting, digital illustration, collage, sculpture, etc.—to explore this year’s 13th Annual Art Contest: SUBJECT MATTERS. Scholars can illustrate their favorite school subject by drawing a graphing calculator that helps with math equations, painting a classic novel that inspired an essay, chalking a moment in history that has affected their family, or something else. Let us see your creative powers at work! The top three winners from each grade level and the overall “Best-in-Show” winner will receive a canvas of their artwork, a plaque of recognition, and a sketchbook. Click here to participate and click “Share Your Artwork” by Wednesday, October 31.
AVID ~ We are focused on empowering scholars by teaching soft skills such as critical thinking, inquiry, and self-advocacy. For example, by reflecting and questioning content rather than learning by rote memorization, scholars will be encouraged to work with others to solve problems and implement academic inquiry. Moreover, scholars will learn to articulate content that they don’t understand. Using AVD strategies, our teachers are empowering scholars to “own” their learning. Here is a speaking and listening activity to show how AVID teaches scholars soft skills.
K-5 HALLOWEEN VIRTUAL COSTUME PARADE ~ Our Elementary School will host its annual Virtual Costume Parade on Wednesday, October 31 at 10 am! Keep an eye out for an invitation from your teacher to join the fun. In the meantime, let the Halloween fun begin by helping your scholar record a short (90 seconds or less) video of them showing off their amazing Halloween costume using our CCS Halloween Fun FlipGrid! Don’t forget to log into the FlipGrid using your scholar’s Compass email address. For questions, please contact your teacher.
SPOOKY SCIENCE LEARNING LABS ~ Our middle school science team will host Spooky Science Learning Labs from Monday, October 29 to Wednesday, October 31. Scholars will learn about germs, see some fun chemistry experiments, make a witches brew, and more! Stay tuned for an invitation from your scholar’s science teacher!
MISS. D’S SUCCESS TIP OF THE WEEK ~ Celebrate all successes at home, large and small! Positive reinforcement goes a long way, especially in the online learning environment where scholars don’t get everyday, in-person interaction with their teachers and peers. Consider recognizing work that is completed and submitted on time! Praise your scholar at home for their academic accomplishments to help keep them motivated to be self-directed learners!
ONLINE HIGH SCHOOL NEWS
AVID ~ Is your scholar falling behind with their classwork? If so, it may be time to consider reorganizing! Our AVID scholars maintain a school binder that contains important organizational tools such as goals, class folders, and weekly learning log reflections. However, all of our scholars can benefit from incorporating a similar organizational strategy into their daily routines. Maintaining a weekly calendar or to-do list can help scholars better manage their time and balance personal responsibilities like sports, church, work and more. Scholars can use the course calendar in each of their courses, use Google Calendar, and so several other options to stay organized and manage their schedules.
NAVIGATING YOUR GRADE BOOK ~ Thank you to all of the families who attended our informational meeting regarding grade books last Friday. In case you missed it, here is the recording from the meeting. If you have further questions, please reach out to your scholar’s homeroom teacher.

Our high school sophomores (10th Grade) are strongly encouraged to join our important presentation next Wednesday, October 24 at 12 pm. The presentation will provide critical information and support to scholars in an effort to build a grade-level foundation of knowledge to help them develop and maintain strategies for success to utilize throughout their education, earn a high school diploma and beyond. COLLEGE SPOTLIGHT ~ To guide scholars on college options the counseling department will provide a weekly spotlight on various schools during the open application period. This week the focus is on Private California Universities. There are many different private universities throughout California, this week we will spotlight 3 of them - the University of Southern California (USC), Point Loma Nazarene University, and the University of the Pacific.
SOCIAL-EMOTIONAL LEARNING (SEL) SPOTLIGHT ~ Like adults, kids also struggle with stress. While stress is sometimes normal, especially before things like a big test, often times too many commitments, conflicts with peers and other stressors can sometimes overwhelm kids. You and your scholar are invited to watch a short video on “Managing Stress Effectively” to learn some important coping skills that help with stress management.
