School News

April 26, 2021

It looks like we are going to make it to the finish line! We realize this school year felt different for many, including our parents and caregivers. We appreciate your support and flexibility as we figured out how to navigate a new normal. As we look forward to May, I wanted to share details about end of year activities and celebrations. We will continue to operate within our COVID plan guidelines, so we have worked hard to make adjustments and still ensure we celebrate all the good we've encountered throughout the year.

Virtual Talent Show - Our Virtual Talent Show will be available for viewing on May 14. Submissions should be made by 4/30. Students were given flyers with all the info and parent permission is required to post any videos. If you have questions or need help, please contact Mrs. Ballentine ( or Miss McCrimmond ( at school. Thorntown's got talent, and we can't wait to showcase it!

Kindergarten Promotion Ceremony - Our kindergarten celebration will be held on 5/25 during the school day. This event will be recorded and shared with families! Teachers will be in touch with specific details as promotion day approaches!

Awards & Recognition - Classroom Awards will occur throughout the week of 5/24, in individual classrooms. Teachers will share highlights with parents of their students.

Sixth Grade Send Off Celebration - On May 26, students are starting the day with Titus! The teachers have some special plans in the works for that day - awards to present, gifts to distribute, and a special highlights video to share with their students! The highlights video, as well as a recording of the awards ceremony and our school-wide send off will be shared with families!

Field Day - Field day will look a little different this year, but we have some fun things in the works for students. We may spend some time outside this day, so it is suggested to put sunscreen on before school. We will have class picnics for lunch, so a sack lunch will be served at school. Our wonderful custodial team will treat us with something delicious from Mr. Campbell's food truck, compliments of the PTO! We are looking forward to a fun last day together!

Other Need to Know Info...

Spring Assessments: Students have been amazing during this first week of assessments. We recognize the need to keep majority of our school day as typical as possible, so we make every effort to keep testing to an hour per day. Because of this, our ILEARN testing calendar will run a couple more weeks. It is so important for students to be in attendance for these assessments. Please be sure students are well rested and have a good breakfast on the days of their testing. All students will also participate in our end of year NWEA assessments in May. This will showcase each student's growth over the course of the year and highlight any gaps we need to address as we start school in the fall. Thanks for your help in communicating the importance of these assessments. When you value learning, you kids will too!

WEBO Summer Sports Camps: There is fun for everyone this summer! Youth camps are a great way to keep your kids active and let them try their hand at a variety of sports and activities. Click here to access the Athletic Department summer youth camp dates and registration information.

Physicals and Immunizations: Be sure to schedule your appointments early for sports physicals and immunizations. Appointments fill up quickly for the summer and students must have a current physical on file to participate in athletics in the fall. Kindergarten students will need their immunization records on file in order to attend school. Don't delay, August will be here before you know it!

More Exciting News for Kindergarten! College Promise 529

Did you know that students who attend kindergarten at a Western Boone school is awarded $100 into a College 529 savings account at the end of their kindergarten year? When they finish 3rd grade, they receive and additional $50 into their account. This is unique to Western Boone schools! We are excited to help families in their efforts to start saving for post-secondary education! Parents of kindergarten students should check their email for instructions for setting up an account, so this special gift can be deposited as we wrap up our school year! If you did not receive an email, please contact the school office for more information.

Help Needed: WBCCSC is currently seeking applicants for the following positions: Custodians, Bus Drivers, and Kitchen Staff. Please refer quality candidates to our district website to apply.

Enrollment & Staffing: As we look forward to the next school year, we are anxious to meet families new to our school. If you know of families who plan to transfer Western Boone, move into the area, or enroll PreK or Kindergarten students, please have them contact our office to start the enrollment process. This will help us anticipate needs and make appropriate staffing decisions as we wrap up this school year. PreK and Kindergarten families can also view our Round-Up presentation by visiting our school website.

COVID Absences: Attendance continues to be strong at TES! As we continue to work through these COVID times, please keep the following attendance guidelines in mind:

  • Do not send your child to school if he/she has been exposed to a positive COVID case or showing any symptoms related to COVID. Please contract the school to determine an appropriate return date and to find out what documentation is needed for your child to return to school.
  • Parents should keep all students in the same household home from school when any member of the household presents with COVID symptoms. If your child becomes ill at school, you should expect all members of the same household to be sent home until a diagnosis is made by a healthcare professional.
