Principal's News

Dear Cliffwood School families,

We are halfway through the school year and this is a great time to take stock of how well your child is doing in school so far. The second marking period just ended and report cards will be posted next week. That being said, please do not let your child's report card grades be the sole indicator for how well he/she is doing in school. I encourage all parents/guardians to reach out to their child's teacher(s) regularly to learn about strengths, areas for improvement, and recommendations for how you can help your child at home. These discussions can happen on the phone, via email, or through in-person meetings, and can yield much more information compared to a simple letter grade. Please try your best to stay involved in your child's learning, especially during these elementary years. When the school, its students, and their families all work together, that's when our learners make their greatest strides and we all can be CLIFFWOOD PROUD!

Thanks and take care,

Mark Van Horn, Interim Principal

Congratulations to our Educators of the Year!

Recently, two of Cliffwood's educators were recognized for the great work they do each day. Mrs. Maglione was named Teacher of the Year and Mrs. Gerrity was named Educational Services Professional of the Year. Thank you so much to all parents and staff who participated in the nomination and selection processes.

Shark Tank comes to Cliffwood!

Recently, students from Cliffwood, Ravine Drive, and Strathmore came together for the first Shark Tank Night at Cliffwood School. Mrs. Bauer's students designed their own inventions to solve real world problems and presented their ideas to the panel of “sharks.” The kids did a great job and were prepared with speeches, displays, and models for their ideas. See the picture below with Cliffwood's participants. The future is definitely bright for these young inventors!

Cliffwood hosts January BOE meeting

Cliffwood School was proud to host the Board of Education meeting on 1/26. It was a nice evening which showcased some of the great things happening here at Cliffwood. Some students from Ms. Pappas' and Ms. Aiello's homeroom, along with Mr. Malone, treated the crowd to some entertainment. Check the video below to see how these learners reminded us to "Take Time in Life." This group made us Cliffwood Proud that evening!

Going for the gold!

Each marking period, our special areas teachers award a homeroom from each grade with the golden award for that particular class. Homerooms earn points for great behavior, participation, and more. The competition was close this quarter but our winners are shown below!

Making a kindness video

Ms. Hickey's students are creating a video to promote kindness in school. Students have worked collaboratively to brainstorm, storyboard, and write a screenplay. The video will be filmed at Cliffwood School by a production company and will follow the story of how one act of kindness can lead to other acts of kindness. See some of these learners working hard in the picture below.

Celebrating our young authors!

Recently, students from Mrs. Werner's class wrote and presented their work for their non-fiction unit. Several adults attended this author celebration and listened to these students as they presented their awesome animal reports. Everyone who attended learned a lot about some very rare animals. It was a great time and these students should be very proud!
